WildCats End PR Trip with 2-1 Record in Last Two Days

GUAYNABO, PR – The Randolph College softball team ended its trip in Puerto Rico with two more wins, and its only loss of the tournament.  The WildCats defeated DeSales University 3-1 on Tuesday and 7-2 on Wednesday, and fell to the University of Puerto Rico – Rio Piedras 3-1 on Tuesday.

Hannah Winfree got the ball in the game against DeSales on Tuesday, and the senior shined in the circle.  She struck out six batters during her six innings of work, and allowed only one hit during that time.  The senior allowed only one run, with it coming in the second frame.  Rachel Lee came on in the top of the seventh, and she struck out two on the way to earning her first save.

The offense was effective during the game as well, coming up with clutch hitting throughout the game.  In the second inning, Erin Wehrhan hit a one-out single and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Haley Brickles knocked her over to third on a groundout.  Then with two outs, Rachel Hickman knocked her in with a single.

In the fourth, the WIldCats took the lead, once again with Hickman at bat.  The bases were loaded after two singles and an error.  Winfree scored as Hickman hit into a fielder's choice.

The 'Cats added an insurance run in the bottom half of the sixth, with Winfree crossing the plate again.  Winfree started off with her second single of the game.  Brickles walked, and Hickman hit a sac fly to get Winfree over to third.  Ki Jenkins then knocked her in a single of her own.

In the Wednesday win, the pitching was once again stout, with Lindsey Chaney being especially impressive in the circle.  She earned her fourth win of the season, pitching five innings.  She walked one batter, and scattered four hits, while fanning seven in her outing.

Randolph got on the board in the first inning, as Jessica Nowak put pressure on the Bulldogs until she scored on a fielding error.

The lead was extended in the fourth, as the WildCats scored four times.  Hunter Glavé singled to start, and after two sac bunts, with only one out occurring, the 'Cats had runners on second and third.  Glavé scored on a wild pitch, before Rebecca Montgomery was sent home by a Brickles single.  Wehrhan and Brittany Campbell both reached, before Dianne Davis pinch hit the two batters home.

Randolph added two more in the bottom of the sixth.  Glavé doubled to start the inning, and Montgomery singled her in.  After moving two bases on two straight groundouts, Montgomery scored on a wild pitch.  DU then tallied twice in the seventh inning, but the WildCats held on for the 7-2 win.

Randolph (11-3 overall) return home for its next doubleheader.  The 'Cats host Salem College on Sunday, with the first game beginning at 11 a.m.
