Softball Battles, but Roanoke Sweeps Twin Bill

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Randolph College softball dropped both games of Wednesday's doubleheader to Roanoke, 9-1, 7-4, at home.

Game One

The Maroons jumped out early with three runs in the top of the first. Randolph answered in the bottom of the second, as Alexx Reinwald reached and later came around to score to put the WildCats on the board and cut the deficit to 3-1.

Despite the early response, Randolph was limited offensively the rest of the way. The WildCats managed just three hits on the afternoon, with Reinwald, Haili Gonzalez, and Calla Christian each recording one. Randolph also worked three walks but couldn't string together enough offense to generate additional runs.

Roanoke added insurance in the middle innings, plating one in the third and breaking the game open with a three-run fourth. The Maroons tacked on runs in the fifth and seventh to extend their lead.

In the circle, Austyn Moran took the loss for Randolph, while Delaney Sipes provided relief.

Game Two

It was a back-and-forth game but ultimately the WildCats fell to Maroons, 7-4, in nine innings.

Roanoke struck first with a run in the opening inning, but the WildCats settled in and responded in the fourth. Randolph capitalized on productive outs, as Michaela Williams lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home the first run before Christian followed with an RBI groundout to give the WildCats a 2-1 lead.

The Maroons evened things up in the fifth, and the game remained tight into the late innings. After Roanoke took a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth, Randolph answered right back in the bottom half. Rachel Arce delivered in the clutch, reaching on a fielder's choice that brought home Brianne Slape to tie the game at 3-3 and force extras.

In the ninth, the Maroons broke through with four runs, highlighted by a three-run home run, to regain control. The 'Cats continued to fight, plating one more run on an RBI single from Christian that scored Williams, but the comeback fell short.

Offensively, the WildCats collected eight hits, with Christian leading the way with two hits and two RBI. Addy Compton also added a pair of hits, while Gonzalez, Reinwald, Chesney Shook, and Arce each contributed.

Rylee Humble went the distance in the circle for Randolph, tossing all nine innings.

The team hits the road this Saturday to Averett for a 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. doubleheader.
