Softball Starts PR Trip off with Convincing Win

BAYAMóN, PR – The Randolph College softball team elected to spend its Spring Break in Puerto Rico, and the team showed on Saturday that it would be business as well as fun.  The WildCats defeated Centenary (NJ) College 10-4 in their only game of the day.

The first inning saw neither team score as the pitching was stout.  The Cyclones manufactured a run in the top of the second after the pitcher Kylie Morgan led off with a single.  But Lindsey Chaney struck out the last batter to ensure no more damage done.

The WildCats erupted in the second, batting through the order.  Dianne Davis led off with a single.  After Rachel Hickman got on, Haley Brickles knocked both runners in with a single.  Several more runners reached due to fielding errors, setting up Jessica Nowak with the bases loaded.  Nowak then hit two in with a double to left field.  With two on and two out, Rebecca Montgomery cleared the bases with a triple to right field, giving Randolph the 6-1 lead.

Chaney came back after the long rest and struck out two, while setting down the side in order.  She followed suit in the fourth, getting another 'K'.

The team added to its lead in the bottom half of the third.  Brickles hit a single with one out.  Ki Jenkins knocked her in with a base hit through the right side of the infield.  In the fourth, Hunter Glavé and Davis both had early singles.  Hickman drove in Glavé with a sac fly, and Tiffany Allen drove in Davis with a knock up the middle.  It gave the WildCats a 9-1 lead after four.

The Cyclones answered in the top of the fifth.  The first three runners reached before scoring on a groundout and a single, cutting the deficit to 9-4.  Hannah Winfree faced only three batters in the top half of the six before the 'Cats tacked one more on in the bottom frame.  Nowak, Brickles, and Glavé combined for the 4-6-3 DP to end the top.  Then, Brickles and Brittany Campbell hit back-to-back doubles to add the insurance run.

Winfree finished off the top of the seventh with strikeout and two grounders to Brickles to seal the 10-4 victory.

Chaney earned the win, giving up only one run on two hits, while striking out five.  Morgan got the loss for CC (0-1 overall).

Randolph (5-2) will continue its business trip on Sunday.  The 'Cats will take on Centenary at 9 a.m. EST, before playing Puerto Rico University at Bayamón at noon EST.
