Chaney Dazzles as WildCats Split in Cancer Awareness Game
LYNCHBURG, VA – Lindsey Chaney pitched seven great innings in game two to help the Randolph College softball team earn a doubleheader split with Roanoke College. The Maroons won game one 4-1, while Randolph earned the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) split with a 3-1 victory in game two.
The pitching was the story all day, including early in game one. Hannah Winfree and Ruthie Williams were excellent in opposing circles. Winfree saw only four batters in each of the first two innings. Unfortunately one was the home run by Rachel Guilliams. She then had the first two reach in the next inning, but Winfree dominated after. She got out of the jam, which included a strikeout, and then set the side down in the fourth in order.
Williams was pitching just as well during the first three innings. She walked one in the first and second, before having a 1-2-3 in the third.
However, the WildCats came alive in the fourth. Rebecca Montgomery continued her hot hitting to start the rally with a single. She was moved by a single from Hunter Glavé. Rachel Hickman continued things with a single to centerfield. The center fielder bobbled the ball, and Montgomery scored. Williams did a nice job of getting out of the remaining jam.
In the fifth, Winfree got out of a jam once again, giving up no runs. However, Roanoke took the lead in the sixth. After an initial out, three-straight batter reached base, by way of a walk, single, and hit batter. Becca Wenger then hit two in with a single to take a 3-1 lead. The Maroons would score once more on a passed ball. Neither team would threaten again, as Roanoke won game one 4-1.
Game two featured stout pitching as well, in all but the bottom of the first. Erin Wehrhan started off the frame with a single in between the first and second basemen. Jessica Nowak knocked her over with a single of her own. After two outs, Dianne Davis stepped up and hit a ball through the left side. Wehrhan scored on the hit. Hickman stepped up next. She hit a double to the fence, scoring Davis and Nowak.
The support would be all that Chaney would need. She allowed only one walk over the first two innings, while striking out two. The third proved to be a more difficult inning, but after the Maroons loaded the bases with one out, she got out of the jam without allowing a run.
In the fourth she walked one batter, but was flawless besides the base on balls. Chaney sat down the side in order in the fifth, which included a strikeout. Another reached in the sixth and advanced to third base. However, Chaney struck her out to keep the Maroons off the board. Roanoke added an unearned run in the seventh, but Chaney (6-3) got Mattie Morris to ground out to Glavé to seal the victory.
Teresa Wagner (2-6) was the tough-luck loser in the second game. After the first inning, she allowed only two hits over the next five innings for the Maroons (11-13 overall, 2-2 ODAC).
Hickman finished the day with two hits and two RBI. Chaney struck out four batters in her seven innings.
The twin bill also served as the Cancer Awareness Game for the softball team. The WildCats wore tie-dye shirts in warmups to raise awareness for Liver Cancer. The team is asking that any donations be made to https://secure.jhu.edu/form/fjhm, which will go John Hopkins Medicine.
Randolph (14-10, 3-5) will remain at home for the entire week. The WildCats host #10 Virginia Wesleyan College (17-4, 4-0) in a doubleheader that begins at noon on Saturday.
