WildCats Fall at William Peace
RALEIGH, NC – The Randolph College women's basketball completed its four-game road trip on Wednesday, playing at William Peace University. The Pacers defeated the WildCats 68-49 in the nonconference contest.
It was a slow start for both offenses, as neither team found the bottom of the net for over two minutes. However, Alexis Calloway grabbed an offensive board, and after a couple of passes, Taylor Samuels found Daijah Johnson who hit the opening jumper. The 'Cats then staked themselves to a 5-1 lead after Danielle Rizzari hit a shot from behind the arc.
Baskets were exchanged, as Lauren Moore made the score 7-3 halfway through the first. Following a WPU field goal seconds later, the two teams once again found it tough to score. But William Peace went on an 8-2 run to take a four-point lead. However, Jacqueline Hockman hit a layup in the waning moments of the quarter to make it 13-11 in favor of the hosts.
The Pacers used that late run as momentum in the second, scoring six early points. Calloway answered before Jennifer Weigle hit a three to bring the deficit back to three. But, WPU went on another 8-2 run to put the team up 27-18 with 3:42 left in the half.
Calloway cut into it, hitting two-straight layups, including one off another offensive board, but the Pacers answered to go into the half with a 10-point lead.
William Peace went on another run to start the third, despite three points from Camille Gallagher. However, the WildCats fought back, as Weigle scored five-straight, before Moore and Maura McMahon combined to hit three from the charity stripe to cut the difference to 10. But the Pacers answered with a final run in the period, surrounding another three by Weigle, tallying eight points. WPU started the fourth with an 8-2 run. Despite an old-fashioned three-point play by Korin Harris, and several free throws throughout the period, the hosts would hold on for the win.
Weigle led the WildCats with a career-high of 11 points. Harris also chipped in double-figures with 10 points on the night. Calloway once again had a big day on the boards, pulling down 13 overall, with six coming on the offensive side. Tyler Mercer led the Pacers (4-2 overall) with 18 points.
Randolph (2-3, 0-1 ODAC) returns home on Saturday. The WildCats will play the first game of a doubleheader at 2 p.m. against Virginia Wesleyan College (4-2, 1-0), in what will be the 'Cats ODAC home opener.
