WildCats Fight Back but Come up Short against Eagles

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Randolph College women's basketball team responded from being down by 18 to taking the lead, but Bridgewater College ended up winning the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) game, 85-69 on Saturday.

The Eagles controlled the first period, as they scored 19 of the first 23 points of the game.  But the WildCats stopped the run and began an exchange of points.  Jacqueline Hockman led the way with five points in the run, which included a three by Abigail Bullins and a layup by Korin Harris.  However, BC ended the first with a 31-14 advantage.

The momentum completely flipped in the second period.  Bridgewater scored to start, but it would be only two of eight in the period.  Hockman hit a jumper in the paint and Rebecca Harvey finished off a layup starting the run.  Cassidy Burkholder hit two free throws, but Randolph responded with a massive burst.

Bullins and Hockman went back and forth for the first 13 points of the run.  When Bullins scored, Hockman answered on the next possession.  Finally Bullins hit a three, which was only followed by two.  Alexis Calloway then scored four points in a row to tie the game.  However, Bridgewater ended the period with a 4-0 run to enter the half with a 39-35 lead.

BC came out of the intermission as the aggressor, scoring eight of 11, with Bullins' three the lone dissenter.  Randolph called a timeout and responded with eight straight to bring the score to 47-46 for the visitors.  The teams once again exchanged points, before the 3:01 mark of the period.  Brie Holdren grabbed an offensive rebound and hit the jumper to give the 'Cats its first lead.  Following two free throws down the other end, Harris hit two of her own to put the WildCats up 53-52.  But the Eagles scored six straight to take a 56-53 lead into the fourth.

The fourth started with each team making several small runs, before Daijah Johnson hit a pair of free throws to bring the deficit back to three.  However, Bridgewater responded with an 11-4 run to extend its advantage to 10 with 4:59 remaining.  Randolph scored four in a row, but could not find the bottom of the net again until the waning seconds of the game.  The Eagles made their free throws, taking the win.

Hockman led the 'Cats with a career-high 17 points.  Bullins added 15 and Harvey scored 14 in the game.  Hockman added a game-high nine rebounds as the WildCats outrebounded the visitors by 11 (41-30).  Jessica Lam finished with a game-high 27 points for Bridgewater (9-9 overall, 5-5 ODAC).

Saturday's game also served as the Cancer Awareness Game for the women's basketball team.  The WildCats wore green and teal tie-dye shirts during warmups to raise awareness for Lymphoma and Ovarian Cancer.  If you would like to help support the cause go to http://www.randolphwildcats.com/sports/mbkb/2015-16/releases/20160128f4a6fw.

Randolph (4-15, 2-8) will head out of Lynchburg for a two-game road swing.  On Wednesday night, the WildCats take on Washington and Lee University (10-9, 5-5) at 7 p.m.
