Stunning Comeback Locks Up Women's Basketball's First-Ever Winning Regular Season

Box Score

SALEM, Va. -- Randolph locked up the first regular season above .500 in program history today with an incredible come-from-behind victory at Roanoke, 59-58.

The WildCats closed the game on an 10-2 run, capped by the game-winning free throw from junior Abigail Bullins with three seconds remaining to give the team its first-ever win at Roanoke in 23 tries.

Randolph got off to a superb start, scoring the first five points behind a layup from first-year Daijah Johnson on the first possession and a jumper from senior Allie Druffel ahead of a free throw from senior Jensen Hoover.

The offense stalled after that however, as the team earned just one field goal during a 21-2 run that covered over 11 minutes.

Sophomore Brie Holdren hit a three pointer to end that rally, as the WildCat defense locked down, refusing to allow a Roanoke field goal for almost six minutes.

Another Holdren three and one from Bullins helped Randolph back within seven, but Roanoke used a late spurt to go into halftime up 28-17.

That lead grew to 14 once again twice early in the second half, but the teams kept exchanging runs.

Roanoke's last strong surge put the hosts up 52-41 with 7:24 remaining.

Randolph turned it on after that, however.

Taylor Samuels took the ball to the hoop to earn a layup on Randolph's next possession. Following that, Druffel and Holdren each hit jumpers, suddenly making the lead just five.

After the teams exchanged baskets, Randolph was down seven with 4:19 to go.

Consecutive layups from Bullins cut the deficit to three, followed by two free throws by senior Chelsea Tyler.

After a Roanoke layup by Kanisha Wiley, Bullins split a pair of free throws.

Samuels pulled down the defensive board on the next Roanoke possession, setting up Hoover to hit a game tying jumper off a feed from Tyler with 57 seconds remaining.

Off of a turnover, Randolph had the ball with time running out.

After a miss, Bullins pulled down an important offensive rebound and was fouled.

She hit her first of two with three seconds left to put the pressure on Roanoke.

The Maroons called a timeout after the second was missed, but the play drawn up for a game-winning three was unsuccessful, sending Randolph home with its first win at Roanoke ever and only the third all-time between these teams.

Holdren led Randolph with 16 points, while Bullins had 15 and Druffel had 11.

Druffel led all players on the glass with 13 rebounds, just ahead of Hoover's 11.

With the win, Randolph moves to 13-10 on the season, extending the program record for wins in a season.

With just two games remaining in the regular season, the WildCats have clinched their first-ever winning regular season and the first season ever guaranteed to finish .500 or better.

"I am so proud of our team's fight today," head coach Allison Nichols said. "We struggled to hit shots and get in a rhythm in the first half but we stuck together and kept fighting."

"The shots finally started falling in the second half," she continued. "We found a way to win a very big game."

With the win, Randolph breaks a three-way tie for ninth place in the ODAC standings to take sole possession of that seed with a pair of games to go.

Unfortunately for the WildCats, the team is unofficially eliminated from hosting a home playoff game due to the results of other games in the conference.

The team will have a chance to continue building momentum for the ODAC tournament with a mid-week trip to Washington and Lee before returning home for the season's final regular season game.

On that Saturday, Randolph will precede the contest with Emory and Henry with Senior Day ceremonies.
