Randolph Ties Program Record With 10th Women's Hoops Victory

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- This year's Randolph team joins the 1997-98 squad as the only two to win 10 games in a season, as the Wildcats defeated Hollins, 71-53.

In the win, the WildCats (10-10, 4-7 ODAC) became the fastest team in program history to get to 10 wins in a season (20 games), besting the 1997-98 squad by one game in reaching that plateau.

Seeking revenge for a defeat at the hands of the WildCats in Roanoke earlier this year, Hollins (6-14, 1-10 ODAC) raced out to a 5-0 start at the RAD Center.

Randolph tied the score four times in the first eight minutes, but couldn't take a lead early.

After Randolph leveled for the fourth time, Hollins scored seven straight in a 1:12 span to jump back out front, 21-14.

Randolph chipped away to equalize for the fifth time, but Hollins received a three-pointer to take its final edge of the game.

Randolph immediately used a 9-0 run courtesy of three straight threes to take the lead for good, as two triples from sophomore Abigail Bullins (Asheboro, N.C./Asheboro) sandwiched one from senior Emilee Dunton (Forest, Va./Brookville).

After entering intermission with a four-point lead, Randolph scored 15 of the first 20 points of the second half, limiting Hollins to just two baskets over the first 11:11 of the frame.

The team's advantage grew to as much as 23 before coasting to victory in the final minutes.

Dunton was the game's leading scorer, tallying 23 points to go with her team-high nine rebounds.

Junior Chelsea Tyler (Richmond, Va./Henrico) had a dozen points, all in the second half. Bullins and junior Allie Druffel (Centreville. Va./Westfield) each added 10.

The WildCats committed a season-low six turnovers in the victory, forcing Hollins into 17 mistakes.

"This was really big for us. We set some goals early in the season and one of our goals was  to break the program record for wins in a season," head coach Allison Nichols said after the game. "But we have our sights set much higher."

Randolph has improved its win totals in each season since Nichols took over the program.

Randolph has its first chance to break the record on Saturday, when it hosts Eastern Mennonite in the second half of an ODAC double-header at the RAD Center. The team is now 7-3 at home.
