Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The first 10 minutes of tonight's game could not have been scripted better for Randolph, but Lynchburg found its shooting stroke, downing the WildCats, 70-61.
Randolph (10-13, 4-10 ODAC) never trailed in the first half of tonight's contest, jumping out to an early lead and being equalized only twice in the frame.
After Lynchburg (15-9, 12-3 ODAC) tied the game at 6-6, the WildCats used a 12-2 run to gain a double-digit lead.
The Hornets only hit on a single field goal in the first 7:39 of the contest. Lynchburg was 1-for-10 from the floor in that span.
"Our defense played great. I think we fought for every single possession," head coach Allison Nichols said. "For the most part, we did a great job on the boards, as well."
The guests responded, however, using a 13-2 run to get within one, holding the WildCats to a single basket by junior Allie Druffel (Centreville. Va./Westfield) over 6:05.
Randolph held off a few challenges to end the period, taking that one point advantage into the break.
That lead lasted just 11 seconds into the second half, however, as a three put Lynchburg up for the first time and keyed a 9-0 spurt early.
The hosts cut the lead to five and four multiple times, but could never pull within a single possession, as the league's No. 2 team always found an answer.
Randolph's last flurry was met with a 6-0 reply by Lynchburg, icing the game.
Both teams found balanced scoring, as Lynchburg had five double-digit scorers, while Randolph had four. No player had more than 15 points.
Druffel led Randolph with 14 points and was the game's top rebounder with nine boards.
The junior was trailed in scoring by sophomore Abigail Bullins (Asheboro, N.C./Asheboro), senior Emilee Dunton (Forest, Va./Brookville) and junior Jensen Hoover (Woodstock, Va./Central). The players had 13, 12 and 10, respectively.
The contest was the team's Play 4Kay Game, supporting the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. The team and staff wore pink for the event, with donations accepted for the duration of the game.
Randolph continues its run of five games in 10 days with a trip to Washington & Lee.
