Hornets Use Late Surge to Down Women's Basketball

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Shenandoah scored the game's final 13 points to earn an ODAC victory this afternoon.

Randolph (8-7, 2-4 ODAC) held a small lead at intermission after a late surge, thanks to an off-balance three from sophomore Abigail Bullins (Asheboro, N.C./Asheboro) that beat the shot clock, followed up by a turnaround jumper by Allie Druffel (Centreville. Va./Westfield) right before the break.

Randolph only enjoyed a small lead thanks in large part to Imani Heggins, who had 14 of her game-high 25 points in the first half, including scoring 10 straight Hornet (6-9, 3-3 ODAC) points.

Out of the break, neither team could grow its lead larger than a single possession until Shenandoah took a four point advantage with 12:39 left.

Randolph immediately scored the game's next five points to take the lead.

The teams exchanged small spurts, putting Randolph behind by five with 7:42 left.

The hosts quickly jumped ahead after a 7-0 run courtesy of a Druffel layup, assisted by senior Emilee Dunton (Forest, Va./Brookville), and five straight points from Dunton.

Dunton finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, marking the closest any Randolph player has come to a triple-double since Jenn Baptist's record-setting game against Randolph-Macon in 1998.

After two free throws by first year Brie Holdren (Bedford, Va./Staunton River), Randolph held an edge of 61-57 with 4:53 left.

The Hornets scored the last 13 points, however, taking home a hard-fought victory.

Druffel had her second straight impressive game and finished with team highs in points and rebounds with 17 and 13, respectively.

Holly Chittenden had 15 points and a game-high 14 rebounds for the Hornets.

The WildCats will seek to stop their losing skid on Tuesday, with a trip to Roanoke.
