Women's Basketball Sets Offensive Mark But Falls to Randolph-Macon

Box Score

ASHLAND, Va. -- Randolph scored its most points in a regulation-length game in program history, but fell to a team receiving votes in the national poll, 115-92.

Randolph-Macon, which features an offense nationally ranked in numerous categories and leads the ODAC, put on an impressive offensive showing again today, overshadowing the highest scoring 40-minute game in Randolph's program history.

Randolph had come within one point of the mark twice already this year, but finally surpassed the record of 91 set in 1997. A 1998 overtime game is the only point total higher than tonight's total.

While the teams each put up season-high point totals in the ODAC's highest scoring game of the season so far, neither team broke 40% from the floor. Many of the points came one at a time, as the game was marred by 93 free throw attempts.

While both teams hit at the same clip from the line percentage-wise, the Yellow Jackets converted on 42-of-55 attempts from the line, as Randolph's 76% came on 29-of-38 freebies.

Randolph's charity stripe totals were the second most in both categories in program history, while Randolph-Macon set ODAC records in both categories, besting the previous top mark for free throws made in a game (previously 37) and attempted (previously 53).

Randolph actually had a better percentage from the floor than its opponent, but the team was doomed by the disparity in free throws, as well as a 69-46 disadvantage in rebounds. The Yellow Jackets had a 40-13 edge in second-chance points off of 30 offensive rebounds.

The Yellow Jackets never trailed, but early on Randolph tied it twice.

First, junior Allie Druffel (Centreville. Va./Westfield) leveled the game at 2-2, but an 8-0 R-MC run ensued, putting the Yellow Jackets up 10-2.

Randolph responded with an eight-point run of its own, keyed by Druffel, who scored the team's first seven points of the game, and a three-point play by senior Emilee Dunton (Forest, Va./Brookville).

A 9-0 Yellow Jacket run put the team up for good immediately thereafter, however.

Randolph cut the lead to two possessions multiple times, but a 6-0 R-MC run right before half ended the threat.

A total of 11 players hit double digits in scoring tonight, led by Katie Anderson, whose 23 points were key to the victory.

For Randolph, Druffel, Dunton and sophomore Abigail Bullins (Asheboro, N.C./Asheboro) each had 17 points.

Junior Chelsea Tyler (Richmond, Va./Henrico) and first-year Jacqueline Hockman (Manasses, Va./Osbourn) had 13 and 12, respectively.

Druffel pulled down a dozen rebounds, short of just Anderson's 14 for game-high honors.

Randolph still sits two wins shy of the program record for wins of a season, and will be back in action on Saturday at home.
