Box Score LYNCHBURG, VA – The Randolph College women's basketball team put three players in double figures and nailed ten three-pointers in earning a big Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win Saturday afternoon over Shenandoah University with a score of 76-64 from the Randolph Athletics and Dance (RAD) Center.
The key stretch for the WildCats (4-18/2-12 ODAC) came with 4:40 remaining in the game and the 'Cats down 58-57. Over the next three minutes, Randolph outscored the Hornets (10-13/6-8 ODAC) 13-4 to take an eight-point advantage with 1:42 remaining. The WildCats hit clutch shots down the wire, making three trifectas and six-of-eight from the line to pull away for the conference win.
In the opening stanza, Randolph led by as much as five with 15:52 left in the first after a pair of free throws by Megan Russell (Pinnacle, NC/West Stokes). SU went on a 9-1 run to take a four-point edge, and took its biggest lead of the game at six points after a three-pointer from Crystal Petrus with 4:29 left in the frame. Undeterred, Randolph ratted off a 10-3 run to close the period, leading 33-32 at the half.
After the break, Randolph led by seven on a pair of instances before SU countered to take the one-point edge, leading to the fantastic finish by the 'Cats. WildCat first-year guard Abigail Bullins (Asheboro, NC/Asheboro) scored a game-high 20 points, knocking down five three-pointers to go with five assists. Bullins also turned the ball over just twice in 33 minutes of action.
Junior guard Emilee Dunton (Forest, VA/Brookville) nailed three shots from downtown on her way to a great stat line of 13 points, seven boards and seven assists, and Chelsea Tyler (Richmond, VA/Henrico) also stuffed the stat sheet with 16 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals.
Randolph sophomore forward Allie Druffel (Centreville, VA/Westfield) had six points and a game-high of 12 rebounds before fouling out, and Russell added eight points, five boards and five blocks. Her block total was the second-most ever in a game at the College. Randolph shot 33.8 percent (22-65) on the afternoon, but hit 40 percent (10-25) from three-land, and also made 22-of-33 from the line (66.7 percent).
The host WildCats also out-rebounded Shenandoah by a slight 47-46 margin, and turned the ball over just 12 times, the third-lowest total of the season. Randolph tied its win total from 2011-12 with the victory, and also as earned the most ODAC wins this year since 2009-10 season.
SU was paced by the double-double of Nicole Gilbertson, who chalked up 13 points, 10 boards and five assists. Petrus finished with 12 points and three rebounds, Gabrielle Clarke had eight points, six boards and three steals, and Ashley McGhee put up nine points. SU leading scorer Holly Chittenden was held to six points, though she contributed eight rebounds and five helpers as well. Shenandoah fired 38.2 percent (23-60) from the floor, but made only 12 of its 27 free-throw tries.
Randolph returns to the court for its final regular season non-conference game this Monday with a road contest at Hollins University at 7 p.m. in Roanoke, VA.
