Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Randolph earned a women's basketball victory by holding Mary Baldwin scoreless for over eight minutes.
The Fighting Squirrels (0-5) scampered out to an early 17-14 lead, but their offense went into hibernation for over eight minutes as Randolph used strong defense to bury their opponents.
The WildCats (6-2) scored the final 18 points of the first half, holding Mary Baldwin scoreless over that span to take a 15 point edge into halftime.
Randolph scored 21 of the first 26 points in the second half to get its lead above 30 for the first time.
Any attempt by the Squirrels to climb back into the game was snuffed out by the WildCats in the second half as Randolph prevented Mary Baldwin from scoring back-to-back field goals over the final 27:43.
Four Randolph players were in double figures, led by first-year Jacqueline Hockman (Manasses, Va./Osbourn), who netted a career best 13, shooting 6-for-8 from the floor.
Senior Emilee Dunton (Forest, Va./Brookville) had a dozen, while first-years Brie Holdren (Bedford, Va./Staunton River) and Korin Harris (Brandywine, Md./Elizabeth Seton) each had 10.
Dunton also contributed six assists.
Junior Allie Druffel (Centreville. Va./Westfield) had 12 rebounds, leading the way on the boards. She also was credited with four steals.
Defensively, the WildCats held Mary Baldwin to 28.1% from the floor. Junior Megan Russell (Pinnacle, N.C./West Stokes) had three blocks.
Randolph already has more wins than last year's squad did, besting that year's total for the high mark in the four-year stint for head coach Allison Nichols.
"I think it's great for us to already get this sixth win in eight games to start this season," Nichols said. "It's great to get that momentum heading into winter break."
With the win, Randolph moves to 5-0 at home on the young season.
"Being undefeated at home establishes a home court advantage here at Randolph," Nichols added. "We've tried to do that for the last few years and I think we're really starting to make this a tough place to play."
