Roanoke's Hot Shooting Lifts Maroons Past Randolph Women's Basketball Saturday 93-67

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, VA – The visiting Maroons of Roanoke College shot a blistering 54.2 percent from the floor and nailed 11 three-pointers in earning a 93-67 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win over the Randolph College women's basketball team Saturday afternoon from the Randolph Athletics and Dance (RAD) Center.

Roanoke (7-10/3-5 ODAC) was on fire from beyond the arc all night, as the visitors nailed 11-of-25 from downtown. The game was a close ball game in the early going, as the game was tied three times over the first four minutes. Randolph (3-12/1-7 ODAC) took its only lead of the game at 10-9 after two free throws from Chelsea Tyler (Richmond, VA/Henrico).

The Maroons responded with a 12-2 run over the next two and a half minutes, taking a 21-12 lead following a lay-up from junior Rachel Dellehunt. A jumper from sophomore Bri Lowry (Herndon, VA/Herndon) pulled the hosts to within six at 21-15, but Roanoke again surged ahead to take a 16-point lead after a three from Kelsey Smith with 4:16 remaining in the opening stanza.

A lay-up from Jensen Hoover (Woodstock, VA/Central) brought the Roanoke advantage down to seven with 50 seconds left, but Paxton Gwin hit a lay-up of her own to send the Maroons into the locker room with a nine-point, 45-36 edge.

The second-half was the Laurel Hankins show for the Maroons, as she netted 19 of her game-high 26 points in the closing period. Hankins made seven-of-nine shots from the field in the half, as the Maroons outscored Randolph 48-31 to earn the win.

The host WildCats did shoot the ball well, finishing a season-high 44.6 percent (25-56) from the floor. Randolph was 23-40 on shots taken inside the three-point arc (57.5 percent), as Hoover finished with a career-high 17 points on eight-of-10 shooting. Hoover added seven rebounds, a team high, while Allie Druffel (Centreville, VA/Westfield) posted eight points and five rebounds.

Sophomore Megan Russell (Pinnacle, NC/West Stokes) came off the bench to score seven points and grab seven caroms, and Tyler had a very balanced game of eight points, seven assists and three steals. Her seven assists is one short of the school record of eight, set by Lianna Carerra and Meghan Stensrud, both in the 2005-06 season. Emilee Dunton (Forest, VA/Brookville) chalked up six points and six assists for Randolph.

Smith finished with 16 points, hitting four-of-five from downtown for Roanoke, and Gwin chalked up 10 points. Tatum McKee had eight points, five rebounds and four assists, as all but one player that played the Maroons tallied a point. Roanoke was 18-of-23 (78.3 percent) from the line, and held a slight 32-31 edge on the boards.

Randolph will return to the floor this Tuesday with a road contest at Randolph-Macon College (3-13/3-5 ODAC) at 7 p.m. in Ashland, VA.
