Box Score YNCHBURG, VA – The Randolph College men's lacrosse team earned its third win of the season and third under first-year head coach Andy Sinclair with a resounding 17-9 non-conference victory over Huntingdon College (AL) in action from WildCat Stadium Wednesday evening.
The WildCats (3-5) set team game records for most goals (17), points (26), assists (9), shots (43), ground balls (54), and caused turnovers (21). The WildCats also got a individual game record by Colton Wood (Chula Vista, CA/Otay Ranch) with his seven goals, eclipsing the previous record of five held by three players including teammate John Croney (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) , who netted his record high Wednesday.
Sophomore Bobby Crosby (Bethel, CT/Bethel) handed out four assists to tie the school record for helpers in a game, while Ryan Blackwell (Brambleton, VA/Briar Woods) chalked up 14 ground balls to put himself at the top of that list. Blackwell also added a team-high five caused turnovers on the day.
Randolph jumped out to a quick 3-1 lead in the first quarter, thanks to two goals from Croney and one from Wood. Huntingdon (4-6) tied the game at three early in the second quarter after Michael Brunick and Brandon Sewell each scored for the Hawks. The WildCats would take control of the game after that, finishing the half on a 6-1 run with three goals coming from Wood and two more being netted by Croney.
After the half, Randolph and Huntingdon exchanged goals before the Hawks trimmed the lead down to four with 10:24 left in the game on a strike from Sewell. Junior Jon O'Hara (Yorktown, VA/Grafton) came alive in the fourth quarter for Randolph, posting three of his four goals on the game to give Randolph some breathing room. The cap on the contest came with 2:33 left, as sophomore John Grundy (Gainesville, VA/Battlefield) scored his first collegiate goal for the WildCats.
Wood finished with his seven goals on 11 shots, as he became the single-season goal record holder with 20 strikes. He has 20 with a whopping seven games to play. Croney posted a career-high five tallies on 11 shots, adding six ground balls and three caused turnovers, while O'Hara had four goals and two ground balls.
Grundy led the team with two assists in addition to his goal, and Kevin McCracken (Annandale, VA/Annandale) got the win in just under 59 minutes of action, making 13 saves. Grundy won 13 of his 21 face-offs, and Ryan Pearson (Asbury, NJ/North Hunterdon)continued his fine form with four caused turnovers. Sophomore Matt Bray (Woodstock, VA/Claremont) had three caused turnovers as well for Randolph, which outshot the Hawks 43-34.
Sewell finished with three goals and two assists for Huntingdon, while Gavin Carey and Brunick each netted a pair. Spencer Nix made 10 saves in net for HC. The Hawks didn't do themselves any favors, turning the ball over 30 times.
Randolph College will head to Ashland, VA to take on Randolph-Macon College Saturday at 2:30 in conference action.
