Box Score WINCHESTER, VA – The Randolph College women's basketball team, winners of its last two contests, shot only 22 percent Saturday afternoon as the WildCats fell to host Shenandoah University 51-41 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action from Shingleton Gym.
The touch just wasn't there for Randolph Saturday, as it hit on only 14 of the 63 attempts for the WildCats. Randolph also made only one-of-19 from behind the arc, with first-year Abigail Bullins (Asheboro, NC/Asheboro) connecting for the lone triple.
The WildCats did play good defense for the majority of the game, holding Shenandoah (3-6/1-2 ODAC) to just 27 percent shooting of its own. The difference came at the free throw line, as SU made 20-of-28 on its freebies, while Randolph knocked down just 12 from the charity stripe.
The first half was slow to get started, as both teams failed to get much going offensively. The WildCats battled back from being down 7-0 to cut the lead to three after a jumper by Brandie Witt (Bedford, VA/Liberty). SU responded with a 9-1 run to open up an 11-point lead, and pushed the advantage up to as much as 14 just before the half.
Randolph (3-4/1-2 ODAC) started to slowly whittle the Hornet lead away and trailed by only four at 41-37 with 4:30 remaining in the game after a three-point play from junior guard Emilee Dunton (Forest, VA/Brookville). The Hornets though would outscore Randolph 10-4 over the last few minutes, earning the first-ever ODAC win for SU's first-year head coach CK Calhoun.
Sophomore guard Brianna Lowry (Herndon, VA/Herndon) posted a team-leading eight points for the WildCats, and forward Jensen Hoover (Woodstock, VA/Central) had seven points and a team-leading eight rebounds. Dunton finished the game with seven points, and Megan Russell (Pinnacle, NC/West Stokes) added five points and six rebounds. Randolph won the rebounding battle 51-40, the sixth straight game this season Randolph has won on the boards.
Sara D'Amico scored a game-high of 15 points for the Hornets, while Holly Chittenden chalked up a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. Crystal Petrus added nine points for the Hornets, who were out-scored in the second half by Randolph 26-23.
Randolph will be off until Sunday, December 16 when the Sea Gulls of Salisbury University come to the Randolph Athletics and Dance (RAD) Center for a noon tip-off with the WildCats.
