Box Score LYNCHBURG, VA – Randolph College shot the best percentage it has in over a month but couldn't overcome the Virginia Wesleyan College defensive pressure as the Marlins earned a 95-46 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory Friday night in women's basketball action.
The WildCats (3-11/0-9 ODAC) hung with the conference leading Marlins for the first eight minutes of the game, leading VWC by four at 14-10 after a layup from first-year forward Jensen Hoover (Woodstock, VA/Central). The Marlins defense would force eight turnovers over the next four minutes, which led to a 19-0 run from VWC (13-3/10-1 ODAC).
Randolph trimmed the advantage back down to 13 after a rebound put back by Sam Sublett (Bedford, VA/Staunton River), who was playing in her first game of the season after dealing with knee issues. VWC reeled off another run, this time scoring 14 of the game's next 16 points to pull clear for good.
Randolph was led by the 14 points from first-year Brianna Lowry (Herndon, VA/Herndon). Lowry was five-of-nine from the floor in only 24 minutes of game action. First-year Bonnie Bishop (Fairfax, VA/Trinity Christian) scored seven points, hitting both shots from distance, while Hoover and Chelsea Tyler (Richmond, VA/Henrico) each had six points and five boards.
Junior Olivia Johnson (Monroe, NC/Union Academy) corralled six rebounds to lead Randolph, which posted a season-high of eight blocks. Randolph finished 15-48 (31.3 percent) from the floor, but turned the ball over 36 times, a season high.
VWC was paced by standout first-year guard Sarah Seipp, who finished with 22 points. She also contributed five rebounds and nine steals, which tied the Virginia Wesleyan record for thefts in a game. Kristen Blalock struggled from the floor, but still managed 13 points, while Katie Tassa came off the bench to score 11 points and grab eight rebounds.
Christina Morris added eight points, nine rebounds and two blocks for the Marlins, who shot 41.8 percent (33-79) from the field. VWC won the rebounding battle 54-34 (28 offensive) and also notched 35 points off turnovers.
Randolph has a quick turnaround as it will now head to Emory & Henry College tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. to take on the Wasps in another ODAC game, the first road game for Randolph in 47 days.
