Box Score BRYN MAWR, PA – Randolph College women's basketball head mentor Allison Nichols earned her first career win as the head coach of the WildCats with a 50-34 victory over the Owls of Bryn Mawr College in non-conference action Saturday afternoon.
The victory pulled Randolph's record to 1-1 on the season going into Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play Tuesday evening. The WildCats led the entire game, as first-year Megan Russell (Pinnacle, NC/West Stokes) hit a lay-up to open the scoring in the game's opening minute, two of her eight points on the contest.
Randolph opened up an eight-point lead at 12-4 after a three-pointer from Bri Lowry (Herndon, VA/Herndon) . The Owls (0-1) went on a 7-0 run to trim the lead to one at 12-11, but the WildCats responded with a 17-5 run over the rest of the half to go into intermission up 13 at 29-16.
After the halftime break, the WildCats increased the lead to 15 points on a lay-up by Russell, but Bryn Mawr again chipped away over the next ten minutes to make the score 35-28 with seven minutes left. The Randolph defense would clamp down and the offense would post a 13-2 run to increase the lead to 18 with 43 seconds left, clinching the victory for Randolph and Nichols.
Lowry finished with a team-best 13 points, grabbing four boards and three steals. Russell had two blocks and six boards to go with her eight points, while first-year Chelsea Tyler (Richmond, VA/Henrico) had nine points and four rebounds. All but two players scored for Randolph, which shot 31 percent from the floor (18-58).
Bryn Mawr was led by the 15 points and 17 rebounds from Nicolette Parmese, while fellow forward Jackie Handy also chalked up a double-double with 10 points and 12 caroms. Taytiana Welch scored the only seven points that the Owls got off the bench, as Randolph held BMC to only 16.3 percent shooting from the field.
Turnovers also doomed the hometeam Saturday as the WildCats forced Bryn Mawr into 33 giveaways. Only four players scored for the Owls, as they missed all five shots from downtown but won the rebounding battle 53-34.
Randolph will battle Virginia Wesleyan College Tuesday evening in Norfolk, VA in the ODAC opener for the WildCats from the Batten Center.
