Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph men's basketball team hosted Washington and Lee on Wednesday night at the RAD Center. The teams were tied at halftime but the Generals ran away from the WildCats in the second half as they went on to win 93-66.
The win improves Washington and Lee to 17-7 overall and 10-5 in the ODAC. Randolph drops to 10-14 overall and 5-10 in the conference.
Randolph went ahead 6-0 in the first half with points coming from two seniors, Sammy Hooper (Richmond, Va./Midlothian) and Nick Goble (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park). W&L put up its own 6-0 run to tie the game up with 15:49 showing on the game clock. A 7-0 WildCat run staked the home team to a 13-6 lead that grew to as much as 17-10. An 11-0 Generals run gave Washington Lee a 21-17 advantage.
W&L led 31-26 with 4:32 to go until halftime. Randolph tied it up on a Hooper jumper and then went ahead on a Hooper three-point basket with 2:39 showing on the clock. The WildCats held a 38-36 lead with 25 ticks left after a Brian Smith (Dumfries, Va./C.D. Hylton) jump shot. W&L's Curtis Mitchell hit a layup with time expiring to tie the game at 38. A foul by Justin Dula (Taylorsville, N.C./Alexander Central) put Mitchell at the line to give the Generals a chance to take the lead but he missed and the teams went to their respective locker rooms.
The opening two minutes of the second half mimicked the first as both teams traded baskets. The game was tied 45-45 at 18:05 when W&L embarked on a 16-5 run to take its biggest lead of the evening, 61-50, with 12:33 left to play.
The 'Cats got to within seven points when Dula dunked the ball in with just under nine minutes left in regulation. That would be as close as Randolph would get as Washington and Lee blew the game open with a 14-0 run to go up 80-59 with 5:31 to play.
Both teams were less than two points away in field goal percentage in the first half. The second half was a different story as the Generals caught fire and made 66.7% (22-of-33) to just 33.3% (10-of-30) for the WildCats.
Randolph did enjoy a sizable advantage in rebounds as they led 49-33. The 'Cats also led in second chance points 19-11.
Hooper scored 20 points, pulled down eight rebounds, and dished out five assists. Smith added 11 points and three rebounds. Elijah Ford (Chantilly, Va./Chantilly) contributed nine points and five rebounds as did Dula. Goble finished with four points and five rebounds. Hooper, Goble, and third senior Drew Hayden (Vinton, Va./William Byrd) were recognized prior to the start of the game.
Randolph concludes the regular season this Saturday at Shenandoah. Game time will be at 2:00 p.m.
