LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph men's basketball team hosted Averett in an ODAC game on Wednesday night at Giles Gymnasium. The Cougars won 83-63 over the WildCats.
It was 9-8 Averett at the 15:47 mark of the first half. The Cougars then went on a 10-1 run to go ahead 19-9 with 13:11 left in the period. Randolph closed to within four points, 21-17, at the 11:08 mark. Averett's 9-0 run expanded its lead to 13 points, 20-17, with 5:51 remaining in the period. The WildCats were able to chip away their deficit to single digits, 38-29, at halftime.
A three-point basket by Stacy Byrd (Amelia Court House, Va./The Carmel) to start the second half made it a two-possession contest 20 seconds into the period. Randolph moved to within five points, 44-39, at 16:06. The Cougars eventually took a double-digit lead on the WildCats that did not dip below 10 points as they pulled away in the second half.
Aveion Tucker (Newport News, Va./Woodside HS) led the 'Cats with 17 points and seven assists. He added two rebounds and two steals. Khalil Caple (Suffolk, Va./Kings Fork HS) contributed 15 points, five steals, three assists, and three rebounds. Byrd finished with nine points.
Randolph hosts it home finale this coming Saturday against Bridgewater. Game time will be at 2:00 p.m.
