LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph men's basketball team hosted Bridgewater in its regular season home finale on Saturday afternoon at Giles Gymnasium. The WildCats had season-highs in shooting percentage and had four players reach double-digits as Randolph won 89-80 over the Eagles.
The victory snaps the WildCats' 11-game winless streak. It is also the team's first ODAC win of the season.
Randolph started off strong to begin the first half as it got out to a 10-0 lead a little over three and a half minutes into the period. The WildCats upped their advantage to 13 points, 15-2, at the 14:42 mark. Bridgewater rallied with an 8-0 run to close to 15-13. It was 22-20 Randolph when the 'Cats went on a 10-2 run to go up 32-22 with 5:50 showing on the game clock. The Eagles were able to make it a two-possession game at the break, 42-36.
In the second half, a layup by Carter Palmer cut the WildCat lead to four points, 42-38, to begin the period. Randolph led by 10 points, 62-52, with 12:06 remaining. Their lead briefly dipped below double digits at nine points, 63-54, with 11:04 left to play. Randolph would hold a double-digit lead for the remainder of the half, save for the last 18 seconds, as it prevented any sort of Bridgewater comeback. The 'Cats led by as much as 15 points, 80-65, with 4:31 left in regulation.
Both teams shot 29-of-52 (55.8%) from the floor on the day. Randolph was 13-of-27 (48.1%) from behind the three-point arc which was a season-high in percentage and in baskets made. Rebounds favored Bridgewater 23-21.
Aveion Tucker (Newport News, Va./Woodside HS) and Khalil Caple (Suffolk, Va./Kings Fork HS) both scored 21 points to lead the WildCats and matched season-highs. Tucker also had six rebounds and four assists while Caple finished with five assists, two steals, and two rebounds. Chris Hayes (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River HS) contributed a season-high 13 points to go with four assists in his first start of the season. Chase Depriest (Clifton Forge, Va./Alleghany HS) had 12 points, two assists, and two rebounds. Elijah Cox (Galax, Va./Carroll County) chipped in nine points and four assists.
Randolph travels to Hampden-Sydney on Wednesday. Game time will be at 7:00 p.m.
