Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Randolph men's basketball team hosted its final regular season game on Saturday afternoon at the RAD Center against Virginia Wesleyan. The WildCats came up short as they fell to the Marlins 76-53.
Prior to the game, the team honored its four seniors, Reid Jacoby (Richmond, Va./Benedictine), Ryan Fields (Edgewood, Md./Loyola Blakefield), Keion Robinson (Fredericksburg, Va./Fredericksburg Christian), and Andy Toe (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson). As a group, they were a part of 52 wins and members of the 2016 ODAC finalist team.
As for the game itself, one of the four seniors provided the first points for the 'Cats. Toe went to the foul line sinking pair of free throws. He later converted a layup to make it 6-4 Virginia Wesleyan at 17:15.
Randolph went ahead 9-6 at 15:25 as Sammy Hooper (Richmond, Va./Midlothian) drained a three to give the WIldCats the lead. The Marlins took it back but the WildCats wrestled it away as Hooper hit another three and Fields made a jumper to put Randolph ahead 14-13. Virginia Wesleyan then used a 7-0 run to pull ahead 20-14 with 10:04 left in the period. Randolph got a layup from Fields at the 9:44 mark which was significant as it put him over 1,000 points for his career. Fields becomes the fifth player in Randolph men's basketball history to score 1,000 points.
The 'Cats closed to 22-20 at 7:20. It was a six-point game, 28-22, with 4:48 showing on the game clock when Virginia Wesleyan went on an 8-4 run to close out the half and lead 36-26 at the break.
The Marlins continued to add onto their lead in the second half as they went on a 10-0 run to increase the advantage to 46-26. Randolph got to as close as 15 points, 64-49, with 4:35 left to play but could not close the deficit as Virginia Wesleyan was too much in the end.
Fields led the WildCats with 18 points and eight rebounds. Nick Goble (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) added 10 points and four rebounds in 14 minutes off the bench.
Despite the score, Randolph did lead in rebounds 43-38. The WildCats dominated in second chance points 25-10.
Randolph concludes the regular season with an overall record of 6-19 and 3-13 in the ODAC. The WildCats will see the Marlins again in the first round of the ODAC Tournament, which begins on Tuesday. Game will be at 7:00 p.m.
