Randolph Men Take Down Hornets for First ODAC Win

LYNCHBURG, Va.- In a rematch of their game last month, the Randolph men's basketball team was looking to exact revenge on Shenandoah on Saturday afternoon. The WildCats were able to get the satisfaction they wanted as they defeated the Hornets 75-54 at the RAD Center.

It was the 'Cats' first win in the ODAC this season. The victory lifts their overall record to 4-11 and 1-5 in the conference. Shenandoah drops to 7-8 and 2-4 in the league.

Randolph started off strong to begin the game as it got off to an 8-0 lead before the Hornets could register their first basket. The WildCats soon expanded their lead to 12 points, 19-7, at 14:16 with Brian Smith (Dumfries, Va./C.D. Hylton) supplying the team's last 11 points.

Shenandoah was able to close the gap to 20-13 with less than 12 minutes showing on the game clock. A 9-2 run by the WildCats grew its lead to 29-15 at 7:32. Randolph was relentless from beyond the three-point arc with Sammy Hooper (Richmond, Va./Midlothian) and Smith sinking back-to-back treys to key a 12-3 spurt. Randolph held a commanding 41-25 lead at halftime.

The Hornets crept back in the second half as they started off with an 8-1 run to trail 42-33. Randolph was unfazed as it continued to add pressure with a 10-5 run to lead 52-38 with 8:50 remaining in the contest. The WildCats would go to outscore the Hornets the rest of the way 21-12.

Randolph was 24-of-64 (37.5%) from the floor and 13-of-35 (37.1%) from behind the three-point arc. Shenandoah was 18-of-59 (30.5%) overall and 5-of-19 (26.3%) in three-point attempts. The 54 points scored by the Hornets was the least given up by the WildCats this season.

Head coach Pete Hamilton said it was encouraging to see his team take a defensive stand. He praised his team's grit and ball sharing and was pleased with the scoring and rebounding during the game.

Hooper led the WildCats with 21 points on 8-of-17 shooting for his third 20+ scoring performance of the season. He also grabbed six rebounds and came away with two steals. Smith added 19 points on 6-of-8 shooting including 5-of-6 in three-point baskets, which was a career-best. He also picked up four rebounds and dished out two assists. Ryan Fields (Edgewood, Md./Loyola Blakefield) had a second-straight double-double showing with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Elijah Ford (Chantilly, Va./Chantilly) had his fourth game with eight rebounds while Nick Goble (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) had a season-best eight boards.

Randolph goes on the road to play Washington and Lee on Wednesday. Game time will be at 7:00 p.m.
