WildCats Earn Sixth-Straight Win

AMHERST, VA – The Randolph College women's tennis team continued its best start to an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) season on Friday, defeating conference foe Sweet Briar College, 9-0.  The sixth-straight win for Randolph came at Amherst Middle School.

The WildCats took control of the match right from the start, sweeping the doubles matches.  Keyu Jin and Aubrey Hawn teamed at number one and faced a tough test.  The two showed great resolve winning 8-4.  Jenna Sweet and Ashley Schmitz played together at number two and were dominant.  The pair dropped only a single game before giving the 'Cats the win.  Samantha Dickerson and Kristen Hamilton teamed at number three for the fourth-straight match.  The WildCats picked up their second-straight win in quick fashion, winning 8-1.

Singles saw Randolph continue to dominate the action.  Four different 'Cats won with giving up two games or less.  Jin swept the first set, before giving up only two games in the second at number one.  Sweet copied the first-year at number three, winning by the same 6-0, 6-2 score line.  While Dickerson did not sweep either set at number six, she controlled the whole match, winning 6-1, 6-1.  Schmitz was even more impressive at number four.  She gave up only one game in the second set on the way to the win.

The other two WildCats playing singles, Hawn at two and Lauren Appel at five, were still impressive.  Appel controlled the first set, winning 6-1.  Things went back and forth early in the second, but she left with the 6-3 win.  Hawn had the toughest battle of the afternoon.  She won the first set with ease, before facing a tough test in the second.  She dropped the set, forcing a super-tiebreak to decide the match.  However, she dominated in that action, taking it 10 points to two.

Randolph (9-2 overall, 6-1 ODAC) will face a quick turnaround for a crucial conference match.  The WildCats will travel to Randolph-Macon College (11-2, 6-1) on Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest.  The two teams are currently tied for second-place in the ODAC.
