'Cats Get Back to Winning Ways vs CUA

LYNCHBURG, VA – After falling for the first time this season last Tuesday, the Randolph College women's tennis team got back in the win column on Sunday, taking down Catholic University of America, 6-3.

The 'Cats and the Cardinals were squaring off for the first time and it made for a close battle in doubles.  Randolph continued with the same pairs they have used all year, and the all-first year team at number one triumphed again.  Keyu Jin and Aubrey Hawn were that pair and they played very well, winning 8-3.  Ashley Schmitz and Samantha Dickerson were the pairing at number three.  The 'Cats looked strong throughout, and won by the same score as their teammates.  Jenna Sweet and Lauren Appel were the number two pairing.  The two snagged four games, but could not get the 'W'.

Jin came out in singles at the top spot, and faced a battle in the first set.  It went back and forth, until she earned the 7-5 victory.  Jin then settled in and romped in set number two, winning 6-1.  Sweet played at number three and continued to build on her career lead for singles victories.  She worked hard, winning 6-2, 6-1.  Schmitz followed her at number four, and allowed only three games to go to the Cardinals, as she swept the first set, before sealing the match 6-3.

Appel and Hawn suffered similar fates at number five and two respectively.  Both fell in the first set, but came back strong in the second.  Appel won four games before succumbing, whereas Hawn forced a tiebreak.  She kept it close but fell 8-6 in the tiebreak.

The most entertaining match came at number six, where Dickerson took to the court.  She battled to a 6-4 first set win, before taking six games in the second.  However, a tiebreak was needed in that set, and the Cardinal emerged with the win.  Due to the fact that there was plenty of daylight, an additional set was played.  Dickerson showed her stamina and power, and won 6-4, sealing the victory.

Randolph (2-1 overall) will be off until playing in Hilton Head, SC during Spring Break.  The WildCats will take on St. John Fisher College (5-5) one week from today.
