Randolph Takes Down Cardinals
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Randolph College men's tennis team hosted Catholic University of America on Sunday, in the first meeting between the two programs. The WildCats controlled the match throughout, winning by an 8-1 decision.
The WildCats got things going in doubles, using the same pairs that worked so well last Saturday. Bradley Strober and Doug Corbett were at number one, and the two looked good throughout. The top pair gave up two games, but earned the 8-2 win. JT von Seggern and Kyle Unruh played in the second spot and registered several impressive slams. The Cardinals grabbed four games, but the WildCats emerged with the 8-4 win. Tuan Tran and Trevor Johnson came out at number three and dominated from start to finish. Points came easily, as the 'Cats romped to an 8-0 sweep.
Singles proved to be a little bit closer but not by much. Strober won his first set at number one with ease (6-2) before the CUA player battled in the second. It went to a tiebreak, but Strober pulled it out, going 7-5 and earning a two-set victory. At two was von Seggern. He played very well, giving up the fewest games of any Randolph player in singles action, winning 6-2, 6-1.
Three and four had the exact same scores for the 'Cats. Johnson and Corbett played tough in the first sets, winning 6-3. However, both came out in the second with a purpose, and handled their opponents, clinching their matches with 6-1 scores.
Two of the best matches of the day came at five and six singles, where Tran and Joe Kaneda were positioned. Tran fell in the first set after taking three games. He battled in the second, forcing a tiebreaker for the set. However, Tran came up just short for the second week in a row, falling 10-8 in the extra points. Kaneda had a back and forth first set at number five. He eventually earned the 6-4 decision. The second set was nearly as close, but he emerged victorious with the 6-3 win.
Randolph (3-0 overall) will play their first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match of the year on Thursday. The WildCats will head to Washington and Lee University (2-1, 1-0 ODAC) for a 3 p.m. match.
