Jacoby Tallies Career-High in ODAC First Round Game

SALEM, VA – Reid Jacoby scored a career-high 28 points in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) First Round on Monday night.  However, it was not enough, as the 11th-seeded Randolph College men's basketball team fell to sixth-seeded Roanoke College, 85-68.

The teams started out the game going back and forth.  The game was tied at seven, after Reid Jacoby knocked down his first three of the game.  Ryan Fields and Andy Toe added earlier baskets.  The proceedings continued to go back and forth, as Colton Lee grabbed a 10-9 lead with a three and Fields tied it at 12 with a jumper.

At that point, the Maroons went on an 8-0 run, taking a 20-12 lead.  But the 'Cats immediately fought back.  Jacoby completed a traditional three-point play to get it going.  Roanoke pushed it back to 25-16, but it would get no further the rest of the half.

Jeremiah Davis started the burst with a layup, before Jacoby hit back-to-back jump shots.  The second was from behind the arc, cutting the margin to two.  Josh Freund responded with a field goal, but Jacoby knocked down another three bringing the score to 27-26 with 5:28 remaining.  After a basket on the other side of the court, Fields tied the score with a three-point play.

Roanoke answered with six of the next seven, but Brian Smith hit a big three shortly after.  The hosts added another late basket, but the WildCats would go into the half down one, thanks to Chase VanHorn.  VanHorn grabbed an offensive rebound and finished the put-back while being fouled.  He made the free throw, bringing the score to 37-36 at the half.

The start of the second half continued to feature the back and forth action.  Fields hit a jumper to start things, taking the lead.  Goble then answered two Maroon free throws with a layup.  He then tied it up after a John Caldwell three, as he got fouled on his made layup.

Points continued to go down for both sides but the Maroons lead grew after hitting a couple of threes.  Toe made it 47-49, but it was at this point that Roanoke went on a run.  The Maroons scored 13 of the next 15 points, putting the score at 62-49 with 10:47 remaining in the contest.

However, just as in the first half, the 'Cats fought back again.  Fields hit a jumper, before Jacoby knocked down a three, bringing Randolph within eight.  The margin hovered around the same amount for a minute, with Lee answering four home free throws.  Then Jacoby knocked down another three and hit a jumper with 5:51 in the game, as the WildCats found themselves down six.  But it would get no closer, as the Maroons would earn the win.

Along with the career-high in points, Jacoby also assisted on seven baskets.  Fields recorded his second double-double in a week, tallying 11 points and pulling down a career-high 14 rebounds.  Caldwell led the way for Roanoke (15-10 overall) with 20 points.

Randolph concluded its season with Monday's game.  The WildCats finished with a 7-19 overall record and will return all of the players, as there were no seniors.
