Historic Season for Men's Tennis Comes to a Close in ODAC Quarterfinals
LEXINGTON, VA – The seventh-seeded Randolph College men's tennis team traveled to second-seeded Washington and Lee University for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) quarterfinal match on Sunday. The hosts won the match 5-0, but it was much closer than the final score.
As with all playoff matches, it was played to decision, meaning once a team has sealed the victory, the match is over. It raises the significance of the opening doubles matches. Doug Corbett and Bradley Strober were the number one pair for the 'Cats on Sunday, as they have been for the past few weeks. The two made some nice plays, but were only able to pull out a game in their match.
Dario Schiano-Moriello and Trevor Johnson teamed at number three. The team worked very well early, as the WildCats and the Generals were tied at four games apiece. However, W&L pulled out the match. JT von Seggern and Q Manglapus were the final pair, playing together at number two. Once again, it was a back and forth match, as the two had many great hits. However, after taking four games, the Generals finished the sweep of doubles, going up 3-0 into singles.
Strober matched up against the 18th-ranked player in the region, Jordan Krasner, in the number one spot. Strober played well but fell, giving W&L the 4-0 lead. Trevor Johnson was the only other singles player to have his match finish. Johnson took on 20th-ranked Will Bannister. Johnson hit the ball very well, but fell in the first set 6-3. In the second, Johnson started out very strong, going up 2-1. However, Bannister came back for the win, clinching the victory.
The final four matches were left unfinished. At number two, von Seggern was playing well, but could not capture a set. Manglapus lost in the first set of his match, but came back strong in the second at number four. Corbett took three games in the first, but was very strong before the match was called. Finally, Schiano-Moriello was in the sixth spot, and he had won three games as well.
Randolph (10-7 overall) ends its season with the match on Sunday. The 10 wins is the most in a single-year for the Randolph College men's tennis program. This last match also signifies the end of the careers for Schiano-Moriello and Evan Scarborough. The two made major impacts on the young program, both on and off the court.
