WildCats Comeback Comes Up Short at Guilford

GREENSBORO, NC – The Randolph College women's tennis team made a great comeback attempt in its match with Guilford College on Saturday, but the hosts held on for a 5-4 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory.

In doubles, Dina Velazco and Jenna Sweet continued their run as one of the best tandems in the league.  The two won their fourth-straight match, and ninth overall, at number one, by a score of 8-5.  Emmalyn Snead and Samantha Dickerson were not as fortunate at number two.  The pair played tough, winning four games before fallings.  Alex Wieczorek and Shelby Lutz were the final pair and had a hard-fought match.

Coming out of the doubles down 2-1, the WildCats responded.  Velazco battled through a tough first set, eventually winning 7-5.  The momentum of the win pushed her to a 6-2 second set victory and the match.  Sweet was even better than her doubles teammate, giving up a total of four games in the two set win, at the second spot.

Snead had another battle at number three.  Both players won six games in the first set, forcing a tie-break.  Snead was the first to seven, beating her opponent by two and taking the set.  The second went for the Quaker, setting up a super tie-break third set.  Snead dominated, giving up only two points, winning 10-2 and the match.  Unfortunately it would be the last match the WildCats would win.  Dickerson, Wieczorek, and Lutz played well at the four, five, and six spots respectively, but could not pull out wins.

Randolph (8-6 overall, 1-6 ODAC) returns home for a makeup match on Friday.  The WildCats will host Southern Virginia University (3-9), with the match set to begin at 3 p.m.
