WildCats Defeat R-MC for First Time in Program History

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Randolph College men's tennis team made history on Friday, defeating Randolph-Macon College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action.  The close, hard-fought 5-4 victory was the first ever for the WildCats over the Yellow Jackets.

Doubles as always began the match, but Head Coach Jamie Megginson changed around some of the lineups.  Bradley Strober and Doug Corbett teamed at number one, moving up a spot.  The two battled with the top pair for a long time, and ended up taking the match 9-7.

JT von Seggern partnered with someone else besides Dario Schiano-Moriello for the first time this season.  The number two pair then featured Q Manglapus and von Seggern and the two got down 4-7.  However, the 'Cats roared back, winning five straight games and the match.

In the third spot, Schiano-Moriello and Trevor Johnson teamed up for the first time ever as well.  The lack of familiarity was not a problem at all, as the two got the WildCats to a 3-0 lead after doubles.

Singles saw the same battles occur in several spots. Manglapus played a great match at number four, but fell to his opponent in three sets.  He forced the Yellow Jacket to 7-5 in the final set.  Johnson faced the same tough luck at number three.  Johnson dropped a close first set, before winning the second 6-1.  In the third, he took four games, but could not pull it out.

However, shortly after those two matches ended, Randolph went up 4-2, thanks to the number one spot.  Strober handled his opponent with ease, winning both sets by four games.  Corbett's match (number five) was the next to end.  As with the three and four spots, it was hard fought, but Corbett fell7-5, 6-3.

But the number two spot was the next to end, and von Seggern stepped up at the perfect time.  The first set was back and forth, but he won 7-5.  His opponent took control in the second and won quickly, but the tide was changed in the third.  Von Seggern won three of the last four games to win the match 6-3, and seal the WildCats historic victory.  Joe Kaneda stepped up in the six hole, and played very well.  He took six games before falling to his opponent.

Randolph (8-4 overall, 3-3 ODAC) will head to North Carolina for its match on Saturday.  The WildCats play Guilford College (3-7, 3-3) with the match beginning at 1 p.m.
