WildCats Sweep Hornets in Key Match

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Randolph College men's tennis team did not drop a match on Saturday, defeating Shenandoah University 9-0.  The win does not guarantee the WildCats a spot in the upcoming Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) tournament, but the team did put itself in a three-way tie for fifth place with only two matches remaining.

The 'Cats played very well in the doubles portion of the match.  The newish tandems at two and three worked well together, giving up only two games before the wins.  Q Manglapus and JT von Seggern won at two, while Dario Schiano-Moriello and Trevor Johnson were victorious at number three.  Doug Corbett and Bradley Strober continued to play well at number one, and defeated their opponents 8-4.

After getting out to a comfortable 3-0 lead, the WildCats had a variety of matches in singles.  Schiano-Moriello (at number six) and von Seggern (at number two) gave up only a single game on the way to wins.  Johnson and Corbett were almost as dominant, as Johnson gave up two games in the second set, while Corbett gave up only three in two sets.

The final two singles matches were a little tighter.  Manglapus needed everything he had in the first set, as a tiebreak was forced.  It took two extra points as he won 9-7.  That momentum propelled him to a solid 6-0 second set victory in the number four spot.  Number one singles however provided the best match of the day.  Strober needed nine points in a first-set tiebreak as well to take a 1-0 lead.  However, his opponent, Steven Baker, was victorious in the tiebreak in the second set.  It forced the two to play a third set super-tiebreak (first to ten wins, win by two).  The two went back and forth, but Strober edged out the win 10-7, completing the sweep.

Randolph (9-5, 4-4) will be off for six days before starting its final weekend of the regular season.  The WildCats head to Bridgewater College (7-9, 6-2) for another important ODAC match.  Action begins on Friday at 3 p.m.
