Women's Tennis Falls to E&H in Cancer Awareness Match

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Randolph College women's tennis team hosted its Cancer Awareness Match on Saturday, wearing tie-dye shirts against Emory & Henry College.  The visitors won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match 7-2.

Doubles started the match, and the WildCats battled, especially in number two.  Emmalyn Snead and Samantha Dickerson teamed up and pushed their counterparts in one of the longest matches of the day.  The 'Cats fought but ultimately fell 8-6.  Dina Velazco and Jenna Sweet teamed up at number one, and worked to take four games, but could not pull out the victory.  Alex Wieczorek and Shelby Lutz rounded out the final pairing, but dropped the match.

The fight continued in the singles, as Velazco drew one of the top players in the conference at number one.  She played well against Sveva Mazzari, but could not pull out a game.  Sweet came back at number two, and dispatched of her opponent with ease.  Lauren Riner won four games in the first set, but Sweet swept her in the second.  Dickerson also won in convincing fashion at number four.  She gave up only one game in the first set, before facing a stiffer test in the second.  She pulled out the victory with a 7-5 win.

Snead also had a tough singles match, much like her doubles match.  She lost the first set, but went game for game, until a tiebreaker was needed in the second.  Her opponent earned the win, 7-1 in the tiebreak.  Lutz won four games at number six, but she and Wieczorek could not pull off wins.

The WildCats tie-dye shirts were part of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee's (SAAC) Cancer Awareness games.  Randolph raised awareness for Liver Cancer.  If you would like to make a donation, please go to http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?fr_id=71354&pg=team&team_id=1932376.

Randolph (7-3 overall, 0-3 ODAC) will stay at home for its next match.  The WildCats will take on Hollins University, this Friday at 3 p.m.
