Big Second Half Leads to WildCats Win over Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, VA – The Randolph College men's basketball team outscored Shenandoah University by six points in the second half, helping the team win 60-57 on Saturday in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) matchup.

The hosts came out to an early 10-6 lead, but it would not last long as the game went back and forth.  Reid Jacoby hit a three to bring the team within one, before Andy Toe gave the lead to the WildCats.  Colton Lee followed it with a three, but SU stopped the temporary run, as Malcolm Clark scored a two.

However, Lee hit another shot from behind the arc to make it 17-12.  Nick Goble followed him with a layup, pushing the score to 19-12 with nine minutes left in the half.

But the Hornets answered with their own burst.  Shenandoah tied the score at 19-all, before Ryan Fields took the lead back with a three.  The hosts responded with four-straight to earn their second lead of the game, as it would begin a trade that would last the rest of the half.

Fields grabbed the advantage with a layup, and after it went back, Lee hit another one from downtown to put the 'Cats ahead.  However, SU scored five points to go up 30-27.  Goble tallied again and Jeremiah Davis scored, but it was not enough as the Hornets went into the intermission with a 34-31 lead.

Fields came out of the break very strong, scoring a layup before hitting a shot from downtown.  The Hornets scored the next four to go back up two, but Davis finished a tough move down low to bring things back to even.

Not only did the Davis layup tie things at 38, it started a big run for the WildCats.  Fields, Jacoby, Davis, and Lee (three) all scored as the 'Cats extended a lead to 47-38 with 9:38 left in the game.  But the hosts would fight back, scoring eight of the next 10.

The close ODAC contest would continue to go back and forth, as Jacoby and Goble combined for six of the eight (SU had the other two).  But once again points were traded as the Hornets pulled to 56-53 with 2:31 left in game.

However, Jacoby was fouled shortly after and stepped up to the line.  He sunk both, big, free throws to put the team up 58-53.  SU came back and pulled within one, but the defense held them off the board in the final minute and Fields hit two from the charity stripe to seal the victory.

Jacoby and Fields each had 14 in the win, while Lee chipped in 12 on the day.  The WildCats did a great job on the boards, outrebounding Shenandoah (4-4 overall, 1-1 ODAC) 40-34.  Goble led the way with 11 in the game.

Randolph (3-5, 1-1) will be off for the week of finals before heading back out on the road.  The 'Cats travel to Hood College for a two-game classic.  The first is on December 17 at 8 p.m. against Hood.
