Late Run by Hosts Downs WildCats

GREENSBORO, NC – The Randolph College men's basketball team played in a back and forth game against Greensboro College on Tuesday night.  After seeing 10 ties and seven lead changes, the hosts defeated the WildCats with a late run, finishing with a 73-64 score.

The game started quickly, as Drew Hayden and Andy Toe scored on opposite sides of a Pride basket within a minute of the opening tip.  However, the two teams combined for only six more points over the next two and a half, with the game tied at six.  Following a GC bucket, Chase VanHorn, Ryan Fields and Nick Goble combined to give the WildCats a four-point lead.

Greensboro answered and the score became tied on two occasions, but the 'Cats put together another run to go up 24-16.  Fields had four, while Hayden and Reid Jacoby had the other two.  But the Pride responded once again, to take a narrow lead before Jacoby tied it at 26 with a layup.

Randolph came back and tallied eight of the next 11, as Fields and Jacoby each had three in the run.  Toe and Fields then ended the half with back-to-back field goals as time expired to give the WildCats a 38-29 lead at the intermission.

Fields kept up his high output at the start of the second stanza, scoring early to put the lead at 12.  The two teams then exchanged points once again with the lead staying at 11 for several minutes.  But the Pride scored eight straight to cut the deficit to three.  Jacoby countered with a layup, but Greensboro came back to tie it at 46.

Fields continued his big night, hitting back-to-back jumpers to push the Randolph lead back to four.  Jacoby chipped in a make from the charity stripe to put it at five.  GC fought back and the game was tied several times.  The Pride pulled ahead, but Brian Smith tied it again at 60 after making a pair of free throws.

Greensboro then went on another run, going up 66-60 with just under three minutes remaining.  Jacoby cut the disadvantage to four on two occasions, but the Pride converted their free throws to hang on for the win.

Fields and Jacoby each tallied career-highs on the night.  Both led the team with co-game-highs of 21 points.  Jacoby was especially efficient at the line, making eight of his 10 attempts.  Darus Maddux led four Greensboro (1-1 overall) players in double-figures with 13 points.

Randolph (1-3) will have over a week before its next game.  The WildCats open up Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play when they get back from Thanksgiving, taking on conference foe Bridgewater College (2-1, 1-0 ODAC). The November 30 game will tip off in the RAD at 7 p.m.
