Randolph Men's Tennis Earns First Win of the Year
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Randolph College men's tennis team completed its fall portion of the schedule on Thursday, hosting Southern Virginia University. The WildCats emerged victorious from their first dual match of the year, winning 6-3.
The close affair began during doubles, as the 'Cats took two of the matches against SVU. Doug Corbett and Bradley Strober took on the second Knights team and cruised to an 8-3 victory. It was only bested by the play of Tuan Tran and Joe Kaneda at number three. The tandem won after only giving up a single set. Trevor Johnson and JT von Seggern played a tough team at number one but fell.
Singles proved to be a closer affair in several of the matches. However, it was not the case at number six. Kaneda used his powerful serve to win without giving up a single game. Corbett also had an easy time, as he looked very solid in his four spot. He took control of the match early and won 6-4, 6-3.
Johnson and von Seggern played two of the closest matches in singles. Johnson, playing at number two this year, won the first set 6-4. The second set was more of a battle for the WildCat. After getting down by three games early in the set, Johnson roared back. He brought the second to 4-5, before rallying for two-straight games. Then, up 6-5 with the serve, he closed it out after the game reached the advantage. The win also sealed the match for the WildCats.
Von Seggern faced a similar battle at number three. He won the first with ease (6-1). The second proved to be a back and forth affair that needed a tiebreak. Tanner Basset won the tiebreak 7-4 setting up a super set tiebreak. More points were needed, but von Seggern won 10-8 to seal the match.
Tran also had an intensely close match. He stormed out of the gate, winning the first 6-2. The next set was much closer, going back and forth the whole time. It set up a tiebreak, but Jake Fisher edged out Tran 7-5, and he then won the super tiebreak. Finally, Strober played tough at one, but could not get the win.
Randolph (1-0 overall) will be out of competitive action until February. The 'Cats kick off the traditional spring season at Ferrum College on February 18.
