Randolph Men's Basketball Drops Home Contest to GC

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Randolph College men's basketball team fell to Guilford College 64-46 on Wednesday night in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action.

The game proved to be a defensive struggle in the early goings, as both teams were very physical in their play.  Just under two minutes in, Carson Long connected from long range to start Guilford off.  However, the 'Cats came down and made back to back three-point field goals.  Zach Desgain found Corey Brown on the first one, and then Ryan Fields connected with Brown for the second.  But on the next possession, Long made his second to tie the score at six.

Soon after, Josh Freund took the lead back with a free throw.  He then added to it with an impressive post move from the right block.  But as was the story for most of the night, a Quaker (Justen Best) hit a key three to tie the score.  GC then scored five more, before Reid Jacoby answered from deep to bring the deficit to two.  Guilford went on a small 4-0 run, before Evan Horn made one from long range.  Brown then tied the game with his third trey of the game.  But a Quaker (Best) answered with another three.

Desgain hit two free throws to come within one and Gordon Rogo put back an offensive rebound, giving Randolph the 22-21 lead.  But the Quakers ended the half with a 10-2 run to take 31-24 lead into the intermission.

Fields hit two from the line to start the second stanza and bring the deficit to five.  But Best was there once again from long range, before Zachary Houston pushed the lead to double-figures.  Fields and Rogo combined for three points, bringing it back down to seven.  Following a free throw by Guilford, Seth Wimbish hit from downtown, cutting the GC advantage once again to five.  Will Freeman then came down and hit a tough basket, to start a 6-0 run.

Brown hit a tough pull-up and Remele Hicks followed with a free throw to bring the score to 43-35.  Once again, Best was there to hit from long range.  Jarrod Rogers followed him in kind before the teams exchanged free throws.  Desgain made a layup to cut the disadvantage to 12, but Long came up with the big three this time.  Desgain answered with his own triple, but Houston ended the comeback with a three at the end of the shot clock, as the Quakers would leave with the 64-46 victory.

Brown led Randolph with 11 points.  Desgain posted a solid stat line of nine points, six rebounds, four assists, and two steals.  Best and Long tied for the game-high with 12 points.  Houston pulled in a game-high 16 rebounds for Guilford (7-5 overall, 2-1 ODAC).

The 'Cats (7-5, 1-2) head back on the road for a two-game road trip.  The first will be Saturday, as the WildCats travel to Randolph-Macon College (6-6, 2-1) for a 2 p.m. matchup.
