WINCHESTER, Va. -- Women's tennis unofficially locked up a top four seed Tuesday in a riveting win over Shenandoah, assuring the WildCats the opportunity to host an ODAC quarterfinal this Sunday.
With the 5-4 victory, Randolph earned a program-record eighth ODAC win, which assures the team a better finish than Shenandoah in the hunt for the No. 4 seed and a home playoff match.
In the process, sophomore Jenna Sweet became the first WildCat since 1999 to win 13 or more singles matches in a season with her win at No. 3, dropping the first set but rallying to win 1-6, 6-1, 6-1.
The WildCats, the No. 4 seed, will face off with the No. 5 seed, which will be the winner of Wednesday's match between Bridgewater and Shenandoah, in Sunday's quarterfinal.
Tuesday's crucial match for a chance at home court advantage was certainly not for the faint of heart.
Randolph fell into an early hole as seniors Danielle Lewis and Tiandre Forde fell at No. 3 doubles to open the day.
At No. 2, sophomore Heather Parra and junior Sarah Parker evened the score with an 8-3 win.
Sweet and junior Dina Velazco gave Randolph a lead heading into singles play with an 8-6 win at No. 1.
Singles play had an added wrinkle of intensity with three sets played instead of super-tiebreakers.
Velazco fell at top singles to open individual play in a third set, 1-6, 6-1, 6-1, but the next three matches all went the way of Randolph.
Parker was victorious at No. 2, 7-5, 6-4, while Sweet won at No. 3.
Parra also rallied to win, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, locking up the match for the WildCats with her win at No. 4.
Lewis and Forde each fell, but that was too late for Shenandoah, who saw its six-match winning streak end.
Official pairings from the ODAC office will come after all matches have league been concluded.
