Women's Tennis Falls to Nation's Fifth-Ranked Team, 5-3

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Randolph squared off against Washington and Lee, the ODAC's 12-time defending champions today.

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association's No. 5 ranked team nationally, W&L defeated Randolph, 5-3, in a match played to decision indoors at The Sports Racket.

Junior Dina Velazco and sophomore Jenna Sweet were left unfinished in their doubles match at No. 1 after the match was played to five points.

Junior Sarah Parker and sophomore Heather Parra competed at No. 2, but fell.

At No. 3, seniors Danielle Lewis and Tiandre Forde were awarded a victory by default.

Those two also were individual winners in singles play, also by default.

Lewis was named the ODAC's Player of the Week for women's tennis after going 6-0 for the week of April 13-19.

That marks just the second time this decade in which a Randolph player has received that honor.

Rounding out singles play, Velazco was forced to retire at No. 1, while Parker, Sweet and Parra all fell in straight sets playing in spots No. 2-4.

The WildCats have a quick turnaround, going to Shenandoah on Tuesday.

That match could determine which team hosts a first round ODAC tournament game, which will take place on Sunday.

A Randolph win would assure the WildCats the first home playoff match since the league switched to the current tournament format.

A loss would force the WildCats to await the results of Shenadoah's match with Bridgewater on Wednesday, which would clear up the playoff picture.
