Men's Tennis Defeats Hampden-Sydney in Historic 9-0 Sweep

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Randolph earned its first-ever win over Hampden-Sydney in the sport of men's tennis in resounding fashion Wednesday, 9-0.

Despite never earning more than a single point in any previous matchup with the Tigers, Randolph made a stunning turnaround to earn the win while taking all nine points.

Over the past seven years, Hampden-Sydney has posted a stellar ODAC record of 47-18 and are the only program besides Washington and Lee to win the conference championship since the league moved to its current championship format.

The afternoon started off smoothly, with all three close doubles matches going the way of the WildCats.

At No. 1, senior Daniil Lyalko and sophomore Dario Schiano-Moriello took an 8-5 decision, while Randolph won at No. 2 and No. 3, both by scores of 8-6.

Sophomore JT von Seggern and first-year Bradley Strober were Randolph's second team and sophomores Trevor Johnson and Doug Corbett took the match as the third team.

Singles play proved to be difficult, as well, but Randolph earned each of the six points.

At first singles, Strober took a 6-4, 7-6 (5) decision.

At No. 2, von Seggern won both sets, 6-4.

Lyalko was forced to a super-tiebreaker, but won his battle, 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (10-4), to overcome a second set loss.

Johnson and Corbett dropped just three games between them at No. 4 and No. 5 and Schiano-Moriello won at No. 6, 7-6 (5), 6-2.

Randolph is next in action on Friday, hosting William Peace.
