Last-Second Shot Prevents Men's Hoops From Locking Up Home Playoff Game

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- A three-pointer by Andrew Franz with 3.5 seconds to go gave Washington & Lee a victory today at the RAD Center, 76-74.

The result of the game unofficially locks up a home playoff game for the Generals, while the WildCats now need to wait until Sunday to await their seeding.

Should Roanoke defeat Eastern Mennonite at 4:30 p.m., Sunday, Randolph will be set to travel to Roanoke on Monday for the first round of the ODAC tournament.

Should EMU top the Maroons, Randolph will host Bridgewater on Monday.

This afternoon's game was an absolute thriller, as the fans who braved the snow were rewarded with a well-played game by both sides.

Despite two ties in the first half, Randolph did not trail in the frame, taking a lead on the first possession courtesy of a three by junior Jason Eddie and, after a W&L three, junior Corey Brown was also true from deep to put Randolph back up after nine points in the first 59 seconds.

Randolph had a lead as large as seven in the first half, but the team was ahead by just two with time expiring.

With the shot clock off, first-year Reid Jacoby passed the ball to classmate Ryan Fields in the corner, hitting a three as time ran out.

After W&L tied the score early in period two, Randolph pushed the lead back up thanks to a 7-0 run, with five points coming from Eddie in that span.

After an exchange of baskets, W&L used a 9-1 run to finally take its first lead of the game with 11:23 to go.

Six straight possessions with points kept shifting the lead before the visitors used a run to get ahead by as much as nine with under five minutes to go.

Randolph wouldn't go away, however, boosted by a loud home crowd.

Five free throws got the lead down to four before junior Gordon Rogo put back a missed rebound to halve the lead with 2:03 to play.

On Randolph's next trip down the court, Eddie hit a three from the right wing after a feed from a drive by junior Evan Horn, suddenly putting Randolph ahead.

The teams remained scoreless until a timeout with 35.7 seconds left allowed Washington and Lee a shot to go ahead.

Off of a broken play, Franz saw the shot clock expiring and launched a desperation three from the wing in front of his bench, which fell with 3.5 seconds to go.

Randolph had a shot to win it, but a buzzer-beater by Jacoby hit off the iron, sending Randolph to defeat in the regular season finale.

Randolph was led by 19 points from Eddie, 18 from Desgain and 16 from Brown in a balanced effort, while W&L received 31 points from Clayton Murtha.

Desgain's mark moved him into fifth place in program history on the list of most points scored in a single season.

Official ODAC pairings will be released tomorrow evening, but Randolph is slated to play Monday in the ODAC tournament's first round.
