Box Score SALEM, Va. -- Bases-clearing doubles in consecutive innings brought in six runs for Randolph-Macon, giving the team enough to hold off Randolph in ODAC tournament play, 11-7.
The WildCats jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first on a squeeze bunt by senior Brittney Via (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) which drove in sophomore Erin Wehrhan (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne).
After a Randolph-Macon homer tied it up in the second, Randolph responded by playing small ball in the bottom of the frame.
The team scored three runs on just two hits, taking advantage of two errors and well-timed sacrifice bunts.
Sophomore Jessica Nowak (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) plated one with a fielder's choice and, after an error brought home another, Via successfully laid down another squeeze.
The lead evaporated in the top of the third, however, as Randolph-Macon scored four, helped in large part by a three-run double into the gap.
Another three-run double in the fourth increased the lead to 8-4 and insurance runs came in the sixth and seventh courtesy of a solo homer, an RBI double and a two-out single.
Those insurance runs proved valuable, as Randolph fought back in the bottom of the seventh.
First-year Hunter Glavé (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry) doubled to score one run, followed by a two-out rally.
Junior Patti Vinson (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) cut the lead to 11-6 and, after an error, sophomore Rachel Hickman (St. Albans, W.V./St. Albans) brought home another.
With the bases full, the tying run stepped to the plate, but a nice defensive play on a liner to second ended the contest.
With the loss, Randolph is eliminated from the tournament, while the Yellow Jackets stay alive.
Randolph finishes the season with the program's record for wins (27), conference wins (13) and highest ODAC seed (No. 3).
