LYNCHBURG, Va. -- With a top doubles win already in hand,
Randolph had a shot to put Randolph-Macon in a deep hole, but No. 2
and No. 3 doubles fell in tight ones.
The loss is the first for the WildCats at home this year after
eight straight wins.
First-year Alison
Henry (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) and
junior Patricia
Verdezoto (Cuenza, Azuay, Ecuador/Bilingue
Interamericano) won at top doubles, 8-2, making quick
work of their opposition.
On neighboring courts, Randolph had leads late at No. 2 and No.
3, with both matches ending nearly simultaneously.
Unfortunately for Randolph, the pair of
sophomore Dina
Velazco (Barquisimeto, Venezuela/Colegio Las
Fuertes) and first-year Jenna
Sweet (Clarksville, Md./Atholton) and
the duo of first-year Heather
Parra (Wilmington, N.C./Eugene Ashley) and sophomore Sarah
Parker (Washington, D.C. / Sidwell
Friends) each fell,
9-7, in tough matches.
In singles play, Verdezoto fell, 5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (5-7) in an
intense top singles match.
Henry, Parra and Parker fell in straight sets at Nos. 2, 4 and
5, respectively, with Velazco taking a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 3.
Junior Danielle
Lewis (Kingston, Jamaica/Immaculate Conception)
competed at No. 6, but fell in a
supertiebreaker.
Randolph completes its regular
season on Saturday, with a first-round matchup expected on April
20. The WildCats, who are 6-4 in ODAC play, fell from the final
hosting spot, No. 4, to No. 6 in the standings with the loss
today.
