Softball Concedes Two Heartbreakers to Eastern Mennonite

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Randolph, who came into tonight's game leading the ODAC, fell in two tough games today against Eastern Mennonite.

The scores were 9-6 and 4-3 (in eight innings).

In game one, Randolph fell behind early after three runs came home in the top of the first.

Two more in the third made it 5-0, but Randolph responded in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of its own when senior Brittney Via (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) hit a two-RBI single.

In the fourth, sophomores Rachel Hickman (St. Albans, W.V./St. Albans) and Hannah Winfree (Yorktown, Va./York High School) each drove in a run before classmate Jessica Nowak (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) brought in the tying and go-ahead run on a single to right.

Three errors in the sixth inning doomed the squad, however, as four unearned runs came home for the Royals to earn the win.

In game two, Randolph jumped out to an early lead courtesy of singles from junior Patti Vinson (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) and Winfree in innings two and three.

Winfree, who pitched five shutout innings, was relieved by senior Logan Carter (Richmond, Va./Midlothian), who went the distance in game one.

Carter got out of trouble in the sixth with the tying run in scoring position, but gave up a pair in the seventh to blow the save.

After Randolph went in order in the bottom of the frame, the teams went to an eighth inning tiebreaker.

The runner placed on second scored with just one out for EMU, but a single up the middle drove in a second run to make it 4-2.

In the bottom half of the frame, sophomore Erin Wehrhan (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) was awarded second and came around to score on a Nowak double, but a double play ended the game with Nowak on third.

Randolph falls to 4-2 in ODAC play and will next take on Lynchburg at home on Thursday.
