Softball Drops a Pair to William Peace on Opening Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Typically a team that starts seasons well, Randolph dropped its opening double-header today at William Peace.

Game scores were 5-0 and 4-3. Randolph had not lost its first game of a season since 2005, winners of eight straight openers.

WildCat (0-2) hitters were stymied by Pacer (2-2) starter Aaryn Deal in game one, as the senior pitched a complete game one-hitter.

It's the senior's second straight complete game, leveling her record at 1-1 in the process.

Randolph's sole hit came off the bat of first-year Hunter Glavé (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry) in the fourth inning.

Senior Logan Carter (Richmond, Va./Midlothian) started the game in the circle for Randolph, pitching five innings.

In game two, the WildCat offense was more effective early, striking in the top of the first.

After sophomore Erin Wehrhan (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) singled, she advanced to third on an error. Glavé brought the outfielder home on a groundout, giving Randolph an early lead.

Peace scored four in the first three innings, taking a 4-1 edge, but Randolph fought back in the sixth.

Wehrhan singled again to start the rally and was pushed to second on a walk of senior Brittney Via (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello). Glavé then singled, loading the bases.

Junior Patti Vinson (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) pulled Randolph within one with a two-RBI double, pushing the tying run to third in the process.

A fielder's choice at the plate gunned down Randolph's equalizing run, a fly out ended the threat and a one-two-three seventh ended the contest.

First-year Ashley Dudding (New Castle, Va./Craig County) started for the WildCats, but lasted just 2.1 innings.

Sophomore Hannah Winfree (Yorktown, Va./York High School) and Carter pitched the remainder of the contest without allowing a run.

The team will be back in action with the first two games of a 10-game home-stand this Sunday against Greensboro.
