Box Score WINCHESTER, Va. -- In a game in which the lead exchanged hands
15 times, Randolph had the most important lead change in a 54-52
game: the final one.
The contest was as hotly-contested as possible, as neither team
ever led by more than six at any point, with leads of more than a
single possession for just 2:44 today. From the 16:36 mark in
the second half on, neither team ever led by more than three.
Different players scored each of
the first five Randolph (11-8, 5-5 ODAC) baskets in a low-scoring
affair early, as defenses controlled the game.
After holding a lead for most of the first half, Randolph fell
behind right before intermission, but senior Dylan
Shiflett (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry) scored
on consecutive layups to give Randolph a three-point edge with
seven seconds remaining.
Shendoah (11-8, 3-7 ODAC) sliced two points off that lead on a
buzzer-beater as time expired, but head coach Clay Nunley's team
still had a 30-29 edge at the break.
Shiflett scored Randolph's only points in a 9-2 Hornet run to
start the second half, but an 8-0 run put Randolph back ahead,
37-35, as sophomore Corey
Brown (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham) tallied half
of the WildCat points in that stretch.
This rally set off an incredible sequence of strong defense and
back-and-forth play.
Randolph last trailed after a three by the ODAC's leading
scorer, Avery Green, put Shendoah up two with 5:58 to go.
Sophomore Seth
Wimbish (Fairdale, W.V./Liberty) responded with a
three, and after a Brown layup, Randolph's edge was three.
Shendoah leveled the game at 50-50 before Brown hit a jumper to
give Randolph another lead.
Two free throws from Green tied the game for the final time at
52-52, but sophomore Zach
Desgain (Richmond, Va./J.R. Tucker) hit two
from the charity stripe with 43.8 seconds left to give Randolph its
final advantage.
The WildCat defense forced two long threes and prevented the
Hornets from getting a shot off before the clock expired on its
final possession to hold on.
Green had half of Shendoah's points, but was one of just two
players on the Hornets to score more than three points.
For Randolph, Brown led the way with 15 points. Shiflett had a
dozen points to go with his game-high eight rebounds, as the
WildCats had a 34-28 edge on the glass.
Randolph's leading scorer, senior Mike
Ehilegbu (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft), was the
only other WildCat in double figures, tallying 10 points.
This is the 13th game this season in which it was a single
possession contest in the final minute. Randolph moves to 7-6 in
these nailbiters.
The team returns home Wednesday as it hosts Emory & Henry at
the RAD Center.
