Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Last year, men's basketball held Mary Washington to its lowest field goal percentage of the year until the Eagles' Elite Eight loss in the NCAA Tournament.
This year, the defending CAC champions were held to just 15-of-56 shooting (26.8%), as the WildCats end the calendar year with a big win, 68-49.
Besides that NCAA quarterfinal last season, UMW, which has had a winning record in 11 of the last 12 years, had not shot under 27% in five years.
The WildCats continue to improve on their nationally-ranked field goal percentage defense, becoming one of just 15 teams in the nation to hold opponents to 36.5% shooting or worse this season.
The team was buoyed by a defense that allowed just one field goal over the final 9:27 of today's contest.
Not to be overshadowed by the defense, the WildCat offense broke 50% shooting for the fourth time this season, hitting 24 of 47 shots from the floor this afternoon.
Randolph is 5-0 when shooting over 47% this season.
The host Eagles opened today's contest with a 10-2 spurt to take an early edge.
A 7-0 run got Randolph back within one and, after an exchange of baskets, Randolph broke a 17-17 deadlock with a 9-2 run, capped by a three from junior Seth Wimbish to take a seven-point lead.
With the Eagles within four, junior Zach Desgain hit a jumper at the buzzer, sending Randolph into the locker room up 32-26 at halftime.
Opening the second half with a 4-0 run gave Randolph a double-digit lead and the WildCats never again let UMW within a single possession, pulling away late for the big victory.
In that second half, the WildCats held the Eagles without a field goal for separate spans of 4:33, 5:39 and the final 3:48 of the game.
Desgain led Randolph with 17 points, while Wimbish and junior Corey Brown each had a dozen.
Desgain also led the way with eight rebounds.
Randolph is off until Jan. 2-3 when the team participates in a tournament at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. The team's first opponent is Hood.
