Fantastic Shooting Powers Men's Basketball to Non-Conference Win

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Randolph shot 65.4% from the floor in the first half, including 63.6% from three, to run past Methodist, 83-70, at the RAD Center on Friday.

Randolph never trailed today, but the teams battled early.

Each of Randolph's first four scores were matched by Methodist as the teams went back-and-forth with ties at 2-2, 4-4, 6-6 and 9-9.

Randolph scored the next six, however, as junior Gordon Rogo hit consecutive layups and his classmate Zach Desgain added a jumper.

Rogo shot 7-for-9 on the day to improve his ODAC-best field goal percentage to 67.9%.

Methodist cut Randolph's lead to just one with 11:52 left in the first half, but the WildCats allowed just one basket over the next 7:08 to make that lead double figures.

The team was successful both inside and out in that stretch, as junior Lucas Smith hit twice from his post position and Rogo got to the basket as well to end the run following threes by juniors Corey Brown and Seth Wimbish.

A comfortable double-digit lead quickly increased over the final 4:20 of the first half as Desgain started a 14-0 run to end the half with a steal and layup.

Wimbish hit consecutive threes and was followed by another from classmate Jason Eddie from long range before Desgain got in on the act just before the break.

The WildCats maintained a double-digit lead for the first 19:18 of the second and quickly responded with four Eddie free throws to ice the game when Methodist closed in with time expiring.

Wimbish finished with a career-best 22 on 5-of-7 shooting from three. Brown was 5-of-8 from three for 19 points. Rogo finished with 16.

As a team, Randolph shot 57.1% from the floor and 52.2% from three. That mark from the field is the team's best mark since a win over Methodist on Dec. 15, 2012.

"This is definitely a huge win today, but we know as a team that we have to come back Sunday and play another good team," Wimbish said. "We know this is a good win and we're going to feel good about the win, but now we have to look ahead to Sunday."

That contest will be at home against Averett at 2 p.m., Sunday.
