Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. -- In the team's final contest before entering ODAC play, Randolph earned a 59-53 men's basketball victory over Ferrum after a late surge.
The WildCats scored the game's final eight points over the final 2:45 en route to the non-conference victory.
After conceding the first four points, Randolph rattled off 10 straight points, keeping Ferrum off the scoreboard for a span of 6:13 early in the contest.
The final 16:02 of the first half was extremely balanced and competitive, as Randolph never saw its lead dip below three after junior Corey Brown's go-ahead three made it 7-4, or larger than eight for the remainder of the frame.
The WildCats headed to intermission up 29-23, but a quick 10-2 spurt by Ferrum put the guests up early in the second half.
In a half with five ties and four lead changes, the WildCats turned a 35-33 disadvantage into a six point lead with an 8-0 spurt, which ended at the half's midpoint.
Consecutive threes by junior Seth Wimbish put Randolph back on top and a jumper from first-year Reid Jacoby made the edge six once again.
The lead was trimmed again to one, but a three by Brown made it four before the teams alternated buckets, just ahead of a 4-0 Ferrum run leveling the score.
Junior Gordon Rogo hit a layup to put Randolph back on top with 3:39, but a pair of free throws eliminated that lead just 18 seconds later.
After a layup by the game's top scorer, Ferrum's Jamal Pullen, gave the Panthers the lead and Pullen 21 for the day, Randolph locked down defensively, scoring the final eight points over the final 2:45.
Brown tied the game up with a driving layup, making it 53-53 with 2:16 left and a steal by classmate Zach Desgain gave Randolph the ball back looking to take the lead.
Out of a timeout, Desgain did just that off a pass from junior Evan Horn near the hoop.
Desgain pulled down a key rebound off a defensive stop and Brown set up Horn, doubling the edge.
After Brown got the rebound on Randolph's next stop, he nailed both free throws to ice the contest.
Brown led Randolph with 18 points. Desgain had 11 points and a game-high seven rebounds.
"We knew coming into to today it would be a tough, hard-fought game," Brown said. "We just tried to piece everything together as the game went on and get better and I think we did that."
Ferrum was held to 0-for-14 shooting from three in the game and 35.8% overall.
"We really take pride in our defense as our calling card and I think we followed through on that," Brown continued.
Randolph next heads into ODAC play, traveling across town to rival Lynchburg on Wednesday night.
