Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Men's basketball earned a hard-fought 63-62 victory tonight over Eastern Mennonite in a game that came down to the wire.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair in which the lead changed eight times, while being tied five times.
The visiting Royals (6-6, 1-2) took a five point edge into intermission, and, after a jumper by sophomore Corey Brown (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham) cut the EMU lead to three, an 8-0 run put the visitors up double figures.
Randolph (8-4, 2-1) chipped away, using a 6-0 run, including a dunk and assist from sophomore Lucas Smith (Cloverdale, Va./Lord Botetourt) to get back in the game.
The lead was six before a 7-0 run, courtesy of a Dylan Shiflett (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry) layup and five straight points from Mike Ehilegbu (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft) put Randolph on top with 9:02 to play.
After EMU regained the lead, Seth Wimbish (Fairdale, W.V./Liberty) took it back with a three, but a 6-0 Royal run put the team up four.
Randolph responded with a 6-0 run of its own after two Shiflett buckets surrounded a pair of free throws by sophomore Evan Horn (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill).
After two EMU free throws, Horn was back at the line, hitting one of two to put the WildCats up. Another stop put Horn back at the line, where he once again hit half his attempts to double the edge.
A tip-in on David Falk's game-high 14th rebound with 9.9 seconds left tied the game for the eighth time, giving Randolph a chance for the win.
Out of a timeout, Horn was fouled, sending him to the line for the seventh and eighth time in the final 2:46.
The guard hit the first with 3.1 to go to put Randolph back on top, but missed the second.
Thankfully for the WildCats, sophomore Jason Eddie (Charlotte, N.C./Davidson Day School) was there for the offensive board, getting fouled with 1.4 remaining.
In the confusion, Randolph's bench was accessed a technical foul, allowing EMU a shot to actually regain the lead.
Only one of the technical free throws fell however, leveling the game once again.
Due to the infraction, Eddie's free throw attempts now had added pressure, with a chance to win the game.
The guard hit the first to give Randolph the lead, but missed the second, giving EMU a shot with 1.1 remaining.
"It was a lot of pressure but I had confidence in myself," Eddie said. "I felt good when I got to the line."
Out of a pair of timeouts, the inbound pass from the baseline hit the ceiling, giving Randolph the ball and icing the game.
Ehilegbu led Randolph with 18 and 10, giving the Raleigh native his second double-double in three games. The WildCats are now 6-1 when he hits double figures in scoring.
"I just try to stay aggressive and be a leader and do anything to help us get a win," Ehilegbu said.
Randolph is now 3-1 at home and 14-3 in the last 17 games at the RAD Center dating back to 2012-13.
"It was a huge win, it's always good to get a conference win, especially at home," Horn said. "We need to defend home court."
Randolph, who has the nation's top defense, held EMU to its second-lowest scoring output of the season.
