WildCats Get Back on Track With Win at Washington & Lee in Men's Hoops

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Randolph earned a 56-52 victory in ODAC action tonight against the Generals in another nail-biter.

Coming into tonight's contest, Randolph (9-5, 4-2 ODAC) had won eight straight regular season games after losses, won every game at the Warner Center and had played in eight games with single possession leads in the final minute.

All three of those trends continued tonight.

The WildCats bounced back for the ninth straight time, dating back to last year, avenging a loss on Saturday to get back in the win column, moving to 5-0 at Washington and Lee (5-9, 2-3 ODAC) all-time.

Sophomore Corey Brown (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham) scored Randolph's first nine points as the WildCats led the entire first half, save for a 2-2 tie.

At the half, the WildCats held a 30-25 edge, thanks in large part to shots along the perimeter. At the break, Randolph was 7-for-13 from long range, while the Generals missed all five attempts.

The WildCats hit triples off of each of W&L's three turnovers in the first half, while only committing five turnovers in the half themselves.

An 8-0 spurt out of the break gave the hosts an edge, which they grew to as high as six at 39-33.

Randolph held the Generals without a bucket for the next five minutes and change, however, retaking the lead on an 9-0 run.

After Brown hit a jumper, he assisted on baskets to two of his classmates, first setting up a dunk by Lucas Smith (Cloverdale, Va./Lord Botetourt), then helping retake the lead on a three by Seth Wimbish (Fairdale, W.V./Liberty).

While Randolph maintained the lead after that basket, the final 12:27 brought quite a fight from the Generals.

The teams alternated the next 10 scoring plays, leading to a close final minute.

Senior Mike Ehilegbu (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft), who was quiet for much of the game, hit two key free throws to give Randolph a five-point lead with six seconds left. After a desperation W&L three, Brown iced the game with two more freebies.

While Brown led the way with 15 points, first-year Jake Simmons (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) may have been the offensive star for the visitors, hitting on all four of his shots, all from long range, for a career-best 12 points.

Ehilegbu matched game high honors in rebounds with 10. It's the guard's third double-digit rebounding game in the last five.

The WildCats will look to keep momentum going on Saturday at Randolph-Macon.
